A specialist provision for children with complex emotional needs that focuses on helping vulnerable young people with challenging behaviours to realise their full potential. The school holds a reputation as being a modern and progressive employer, with extensive experience in delivering support and educational services to children and young people who have experienced difficulties in mainstream schools. The pupils in attendance have been permanently excluded from mainstream education, the school supports learners to achieve academic and vocational targets aimed at starting progress into education, training, and employment. This approach delivers significant long-term benefits to learners, parents and carers, communities, and local authorities.
The school is made up of both independent schools and a range of tailored support programmes targeted at young people who fall into high-risk groups in all key stages, including those who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream schools or Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), and those with social, emotional and/or mental health needs (SEMH) or special educational needs (SEN).
Learning Mentor Job Description
* Engage in interventions both in and out of lessons to foster effective participation of students in the social, behaviour and academic processes of the school.
* Work with the team to implement behaviour management strategies and develop relationships with students who may be vulnerable and have complex needs.
* Learning Mentor responsible for liaising with other agencies to ensure that student needs are fully met.
* Support the teacher in the delivery of engaging and successful lessons.
As a Learning Mentor you will need to be resilient. Ideally, you will have a good standard of education, however the role is supportive. You will need to learn aspects of behaviour management and possess the skills and attributes to implement strategies and utilise de-escalation to diffuse behavioural issues. In addition, we are looking for candidates with:
* Level 2 English and Maths.
* Learning Mentor Experience
* Knowledge of the statutory requirements of equal opportunities, discrimination, health, and safety, SEN & safeguarding of children.
* High expectations of students' behaviour and clear strategies for working with challenging students.
* Ability to motivate and encourage children appropriately.
* Ability to work independently, supported by the teacher, with groups of or individual students.
* Willingness to respond flexibly to the needs of a small team.
* Ability to work with challenging students, understand their needs and demonstrate effective behaviour management strategies as and when required.
* Ability to work at an advanced level with the teacher in planning and delivery of teaching activities (including those defined in Individual Education Plans).
* Experience of supporting as a Learning Mentor a child with EAL, SEN, speech and languages difficulties or other complex needs.
* Ability to establish and maintain good relationships and rapport with internal colleagues and external contacts (e.g. parents, education psychologists).
