The organisation

Worldwide mental health conditions are increasing and depression alone is on track to be the leading disease burden by 2030. The world is not yet equipped to handle this growing crisis, especially in low and middle income countries. The global COVID-19 pandemic has only increased the urgency to improve access to, and investment in, mental health care for all.

United for Global Mental Health is dedicated to creating a world that enables good mental health for all. We focus on what will make the most difference to global mental health, and we build whatever it takes to make that happen.

We unite: campaigners, practitioners, national organisations, businesses, people with lived experiences, funders, researchers, governments, and international bodies so that they can learn, collaborate and make greater progress together.

We incubate: Designing and setting up the initiatives that will make the most impact on global mental health and helping them to grow and ultimately flourish independently.

The opportunity

We are searching for a Director to lead the organisation in its work to build and support partnerships, campaigns, and communications to accelerate action on mental health around the world. A particular focus of the role will be working with the membership of the Global Mental Health Action Network (GMHAN), leading and managing the GMHAN secretariat function within UnitedGMH. GMHAN is now a network of over 13000 members from over 100 countries. Building on the successful establishment and first three years of the Global Mental Health Action Network - and the Speak Your Mind campaign - this role will develop and strengthen UnitedGMH's work with the huge range of partners and organisations involved to help achieve better mental health for all.

About You

You are a driven individual who is passionate about mental health and determined to make a difference to the lives of as many people as possible. You will have a proven knowledge and understanding of global health and (preferably) mental health partnerships, campaigns and communications; a network of contacts in relevant areas at national and global level; and an ability to develop and execute partnerships, campaigns and communications strategies to achieve change through working collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders across government, international organisations, civil society, the private sector, the media, research and academica.

Duties:

Partnerships, Campaigns and Communications

Global Mental Health Action Network: supported by the UnitedGMH team and external stakeholders, and working with the GMHAN Advisory Board and GMHAN members, lead the development and ongoing strategy and delivery of the work of GMHAN; provide partnerships, campaigns and communications expertise to the network and relevant initiatives with partners to achieve change at global and national level.

Oversee the GMHAN secretariat function (led by the GMHAN partnerships officer): regular meetings of the GMHAN Advisory Board and the wider membership; recruitment of and support to members; the CRM database; the communications channels of GMHAN; and grant management and reporting for GMHAN.

Strategy: Ensure the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of UnitedGMH partnerships, campaigns and communications strategies and activities against agreed outcomes in order to support the global mental health community to increase political support at global and national level for mental health.

Speak Your Mind and other campaign partnerships: continue to develop and support work in partnership with the Speak Your Mind network of partners around the world and other campaign partnerships.

Representation: Oversee strategic relationships with mental health partnership organisations, campaigns and communications stakeholders; represent UnitedGMH within the Global Mental Health Action Network.

Management: Oversee partnerships, campaigns and communications staff and consultants.

Management and Administration

Senior Management: support the CEO and the team to ensure the Charity's operations and resources are managed in accordance with policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and good practice in all aspects of the Charity's work.

UnitedGMH and American Friends of Mental Health Board engagement: support the CEO and the team in reporting to the UnitedGMH board and the American Friends of UnitedGMH.

Line manage: partnerships, campaigns and communications staff and consultants.

Strategy: support the CEO and team in the overall development of the charity's strategy; and lead the development, implementation and evaluation of the charity's strategy for partnerships, campaigns and communications.

Reporting: support the CEO and team to ensure the development of papers for board meetings, donor reports and annual charity reporting and ensure timely submission.

Financial Management: support the CEO and team to ensure the development of the annual budget and ensure effective monitoring and management of resources; lead and oversee the budget and reporting for partnerships, campaigns and communications.

UnitedGMH communications: oversee communications for the promotion of UnitedGMH as an organisation and its work across all stakeholders including the media; line manage communications staff and consultants accordingly.

UnitedGMH partnerships: oversee partnerships across UnitedGMH as an organisation to ensure strong and ongoing collaboration across all stakeholders with a particular focus on civil society and the private sector (and working with the Policy, Advocacy and Financing Director on governments and multinationals and with the Independent Monitoring and Accountability Director on research and academia).

Fundraising

Strategy: support the development and delivery of the charity's fundraising strategy; ensure it has a clear and regularly updated strategy for fundraising for partnerships, campaigns and communications work developed in collaboration with the Fundraising manager; secure sufficient funding to cover the Partnerships, Communications and Campaigns area of work; and support the organisation to secure sufficient funding for its work as a whole.

Identify new funding opportunities and lead on pitches to donors with the support of the team. Ensure the charity fulfills all reporting requirements and manages donor stewardship effectively.

Maintain and strengthen relationships with UnitedGMH donors.

Representation

Represent UnitedGMH as required both in private and public settings.

Relationship building and management: actively build relationships with key stakeholders particularly as related to Partnerships, Communications and Campaigns work.

Other duties that may be required by the CEO and board of trustees.

Essential attributes and experience

Extensive management-level experience relevant to the role.

Strong team working orientation, with the ability and social skills to work collaboratively with staff at all levels and all parts of the organisation.

An ability to inspire and lead teams internal and external to your organisation.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent presentation and persuasion skills, both spoken and written.

Political sensitivity and ability to apply good judgment in decision making.

High level of initiative, efficiency, and self-motivation.

Experience working in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment.

Knowledge and understanding of global health with a network of contacts.

An ability to develop and execute partnerships, campaigns and communications strategies to achieve change at the highest levels of government and international organisations working with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Experience of working in global health and/or international development partnerships, campaigns and communications at global and country level.

A proven ability to build and develop partnerships and initiatives to promote collaborative working.

Successful track record in developing and executing fundraising strategies and securing 5 figure fundraising gifts.

Desirable attributes and experience

Fluency in at least one additional language beyond English is strongly desired.

A proven track record in developing and executing strategies to achieve partnerships, campaigns and communications goals in support of better mental health.

Knowledge and understanding of mental health, a network of mental health contacts around the world, and an ability to develop and execute strategies to achieve change on mental health at the highest levels of government and international organisations working with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Familiar with, and a champion of, partnerships, campaigns and communications informed by global and national experts including People With Lived Experience of mental health conditions.

Experience of working in mental health and/or international development a country level.

Knowledge of partnerships, campaigns and communications for mental health.

Successful track record in developing and executing fundraising strategies and securing 6 figure fundraising gifts.
