Job Details

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is a small charity doing big things to help protect and enhance the People, Landscape and Wildlife of the Yorkshire Dales. We are looking for trustees to bring new skills and experience to our board as we embark on an ambitious phase of development.

Role summary

As a Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) trustee you will play an integral role in shaping the strategic direction of the charity, its effectiveness and accountability.

Along with other board members you will work collectively to:

  • determine the mission and strategy for the organisation,
  • be held accountable for the actions of the organisation,
  • safeguard assets and ensure that those assets are used appropriately,
  • contribute to effective decision making and information sharing,
  • be an ambassador for the organisation,
  • recruit new staff and trustees.

Trustees are encouraged to volunteer for various sub committees, including: finance, community grants, woodland grants, health, safety and wellbeing, remuneration, and recruitment.

Person description

We are looking for trustees with diverse backgrounds and experience who can bring new skills and experience to our board. We welcome people who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and who can provide new perspectives on our work.

We are keen to appoint people who are representative of our community, our stakeholders, and our beneficiaries, and will help to increase diversity on the board in terms of age, background, and ethnicity.

We are also looking to expand the collective knowledge base of the board by recruiting trustees with experience relating to our charitable activities and our beneficiaries. That might include experience of:

  • the voluntary sector,
  • the local community and landscape,
  • equality & diversity,
  • finance,
  • health and wellbeing.

However, this list is not exhaustive, and we want to hear from anyone who believes their background and expertise could be useful to us.

Whether you are an experienced trustee or looking to take on your first trustee role, if you have the time and energy to commit to the role and can identify with our values, ethos and aims, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

Being a trustee with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience, both personally and professionally.

You’ll be part of a small and passionate team, helping to shape the future direction of a small charity at an exciting time of change and development for the organisation. You will also have the chance to use your skills to improve how YDMT supports its beneficiaries and find new ways to protect and enhance this special part of the world for everyone.

Time commitment

Board meetings five times a year, attendance at occasional events or subcommittees. Average 14 - 20 hours per year plus travel

How to apply

Please apply via the Reach Volunteering site.

The board of trustees will be scheduling interviews as applications come in, therefore early application is advised. However, we do have vacancies on a regular basis and there is no closing date for applications.

Company

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.

For volunteers and charities

Whether you are an organisation that wants to find a volunteer with particular skills or a new trustee, or an individual who has a skill you want to offer, you can:

  • join the community as a volunteer or as a charity and create a profile
  • explore roles and profiles
  • make contact and talk through what you're looking for
  • make a match.

Our guides and resources help volunteers and good causes make the most of skills-based volunteering.

Other organisations and partners

We also work with other organisations including:

  • businesses, supporting their staff into rewarding volunteer or board positions
  • funders, supporting their grantees.
