The Role

As a Senior Civil Litigation Lawyer you will represent and provide legal advice to Staffordshire and West Midlands Police and their respective Police and Crime Commissioners before the appropriate Courts (including Magistrates, County and Higher Courts). You will also advise and have conduct of complex and/or high value Civil Litigation cases, to include advocacy in relation to legal proceedings.

You will be responsible for conduct of legal matters relating to civil litigation, Police Property Law, general civil litigation Law; civil Disclosure and Judicial Reviews, whilst managing a team of Civil Litigation Lawyers, Legal Advisors, Legal Assistants and Claims Assistants.

Responsibilities

In addition you will attend meetings relating to cases and updates within the areas of civil litigation whilst promoting productive working relationships with departments and outside stakeholders, including external agencies, courts and tribunals and other partners.

You will foster collaborative working arrangements and ensure the provision of timely advice across the Forces and drive recovery of costs where appropriate, whilst having a key role in insurance audits and maintaining the Case Management System.

You will ensure both yourself and the team comply with the In-House Claims Handling Agreement in place with the insurers, to specifically ensure reserves and notification are up to date and accurate and to maintain a positive relationship with the insurers.

As a Senior Civil Litigation Lawyer you will report case trends and key cases or issues affecting the clients and ensure that any lessons learned arising from civil litigation cases are appropriately identified and fed back to the appropriate force department and to the Principal Lawyer.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

You will be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience, with experience of advising upon and holding complex cases within civil litigation.

You will have significant knowledge and experience in the conduct and management of public liability claims (claims for unlawful arrest and false imprisonment, assault/battery, malicious prosecution, misfeasance and Human Rights), together with experience of general litigation claims, judicial review and debt recovery matters.

In addition you will be able to provide resilience for all work conducted for the wider Joint Legal Services in relation to all aspects and functions of its work and possess a dvocacy experience within the court system or equivalent.

Essential Skills

You will have exceptional communication skills both written and verbal, coupled with excellent negotiation and drafting skills.

Being professionally credible you will demonstrate strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop others within the team.

As well as being able to carry a complex and varied case load you will have an agile and flexible approach and able to work in ambiguous and fluid situations

As an energetic highly self-motivated and resilient individual, you will also demonstrate significant problem solving and decision making skills in addition to exceptional planning and organising ability.

Conditions

The role is based on a 36.5 hour week which includes flexi hours. The post holder will be based at West Midlands Police Head Quarters in Birmingham city centre.
