This is a fantastic opportunity to join English Heritage's Estates Senior Management Team. Leading a team of dedicated Estate Managers you will play a central role in the conservation and maintenance of our sites across the north of England. You would be responsible for the care of places like Rievaulx Abbey, Warkwarth Castle, Belsay Hall and York Cold War Bunker. It is a diverse role that takes you to some of England's most amazing places and working with national experts in the built and natural heritage.

Your week will be varied and include travel between offices and sites working with colleagues from across the organisation and supporting your team to plan projects and deliver our maintenance programmes. You will build rapport with colleagues and partner organisations and effectively collaborate with staff from across the charity using your energy, knowledge and wealth of experience to introduce new strategies and cutting edge conservation and maintenance practices and achieve operational excellence.

As the Senior Estate Manager for the North Region you would be responsible for a £4M maintenance programme delivered by your team of ten people working across three maintenance disciplines. Your main objective will be to achieve sustainable conservation status for the sites in your care. You will achieve this through empowering and enabling your team to collaborate with colleagues and effectively manage a suite of maintenance contracts that achieve agreed levels of presentation, conservation and maintenance and a programme of prioritised maintenance projects.

Alongside this you will be part of the Estate Management Departments Leadership Team where you will contribute to the development and delivery of national strategy and programmes of improvement of our ways of working. You will be part of a range of national change programmes and responsible for implementation at a territory level. This opportunity will see you at the front of programmes to re-procure our maintenance contracts, develop and drive actions to apply our sustainability strategy, realise change to improve the biodiversity value of our sites, review and replace our CAFM software and put momentum behind our programme to increase the capability of our teams and quality of our leadership.

It's a diverse role and an exciting time to join English Heritage. Along with your energy, emotional intelligence and passion for English Heritage and our work you will have extensive experience of leading teams who deliver large and diverse work programmes and ideally have gained this experience in the heritage or land management sector. You will bring other transferable skills necessary to lead and empower people, plan work programmes, manage budgets and effectively work with others across departments in a large organisation.

Your people skills will be essential and you will be able to demonstrate how you form strong working relationships and effectively collaborate with colleagues across other departments to identify priorities and deliver work is a critical for your success and a platform for you to share your expertise and learn from others. You will also work with a range of partners organisations from Historic England and Natural England and other statutory agencies to local authorities and other charities, community groups and funders.

Your approach to work will demonstrate a commitment to quality. You will have experience of managing multiple and sometime conflicting priorities and have a track record or identifying solutions in these situations. Overall you will be clear on who you are and how what you would bring will conserve the national estate and how the way you work would contribute to a culture of ongoing success.

Members of the Estates Management Team, and other office-based staff across English Heritage, are currently working remotely at home in line with government guidance on preventing the spread of Covid-19. However, access to offices is available for staff who prefer to work from an office location. Site visits are currently being carried out by exception. Procedures for working in all locations have been risk-assessed to ensure that staff, visitors and contractors can work safely.

It is anticipated that the interviews for the Senior Estates Manager position will be held remotely by Zoom.
