We offer an exciting opportunity to become part of a brand-new senior management team in Valleys Kids, led by our newly appointed Chief Executive. We are a community regeneration charity, committed to changing the lives of disadvantaged people in ex-mining communities of the South Wales Valleys. We are looking for a charismatic, experienced, forward thinking individual with financial acumen, innovative ideas and the commitment to implement them as our Director of Business & Finance.

This post will be responsible for income generation, driving social enterprise and financial management. It is being recruited in conjunction with a Director of Programmes. There is a potential crossover of skills and abilities, so potential candidates may wish to be considered for either role

Job title: Director of Business and Finance

Responsible to: Chief Executive

Salary: £40,000 per annum

Location: Penygraig, South Wales with some home working

Hours: Full-time

The Director of Business Development will be responsible for ensuring that Valleys Kids has the resources, people, systems and processes to continue to thrive and grow.

You will be responsible for ensuring successful delivery of the organisational infrastructure, collective innovation, staff development and well-being .

You will facilitate delivery of the business development strategy and annual income generation plan. Initially, you will have specific oversight of three areas: income generation, fundraising and marketing; financial and administrative operations; and our rapidly developing social enterprises.

This role forms part of the Senior Leadership Team at Valleys Kids and contributes to overall strategy development of the organisation. Working with the CEO, you will also support Valleys to develop a strong profile for its work at a local and national level.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy: Developing the organisation's strategic approach to resources management (including financial planning processes, analysis of current and future spending needs, budget-setting, use of assets, implementing the business development strategy and annual income generation plan).

Organisational Development: Working with the CEO and other members of the senior team to ensure that Valleys Kids is a well-managed and successful organisation, with a focus on Quality assurance and continuous improvement in strategy formulation, systems and processes.

Finance and Administration: Managing the finances of the organisation (including oversight of the finance and administration team), linking resource decisions to strategic and service planning priorities, monitoring and reporting expenditure, managing external contracts (including systems for performance and impact evaluation), overseeing HR processes.

Business Development: Leading income generation initiatives to ensure a strong blend of income stream and overseeing the fundraising team and the social enterprises team.

Social and Community Enterprises: Providing strategic management for the work of Valleys Creative and other initiatives that provide high quality management of community assets and social enterprises.

Innovation: Together with the Director of Programmes, leading on developing new approaches to meeting the needs of communities and working with partners in assessing need and making plans for working together in meeting those needs,

Corporate Governance: Overseeing arrangements for making the work of the Board of Trustees effective across the whole range of strategic functions it performs.

Person Specification:


A commitment to community development, tackling structural inequality and other barriers to people achieving their potential.


At least 5 years experience of Senior Management

At least 5 years experience of leading income generation for an organisation or enterprise, ideally a mixture of traditional fundraising, social enterprise and contracts

Experience of budgeting and financial management, ideally with budgets over 1 million

Evidence of successful staff engagement and development practice, linking organisational values with employee behaviour

A strong track record of networking, developing and maintaining external relationships


Interpersonal skills and judgement, which inspire confidence and trust from staff, volunteers, stakeholders and other organisations.

Ability to lead or oversee income generation from a wide range of sources including statutory funding, trusts and foundations, trading income, contracts and individual giving.

Ability to manage multiple income streams ensuring full compliance to agreements and contracts

An entrepreneurial approach - able to use resources effectively and develop new ideas and gain buy-in to implement successfully

Ability to understand and implement effective systems and processes

Committed to leading from the front and demonstrating to staff and stakeholders that community development and service delivery are the foremost priorities for the organisation
