Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 13 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.

Hawthornden is a non-denominational primary school serving the Poltonhall community, within the town of Bonnyrigg. Poltonhall is a very supportive and close-knit community where there is a real sense on tradition and pride. Our school community is multi-generational with both parents and grandparents having attended Hawthornden as children.

The school has a roll of 293 pupils and an additional SEBN provision on site which supports children on part time placements from within Midlothian. We currently we have 13 classes from Primary 1-7. Our school ethos is welcoming and inclusive.

We have a dedicated and enthusiastic staff team who work closely with parents and the wider community to support our learners to achieve. Within our staff team we have a Support for Learning Teacher and 2 Part Time DHTs.

Our school has a clear motto in place - Learning Today, Tomorrow, Forever which encapsulates our ambition for our learners. Our PRIDE values - Positivity, Respect, Inclusive, Determination, Empathy - are incorporated in all aspects of school life.

The school was re-inspected in June 2019 which completed this Inspection cycle. The report acknowledged the improvements around teaching and learning and raising attainment that had taken place since the initial inspection in 2017.

Hawthornden is part of the Lasswade Associated Schools Group. There is a positive working relationship within this solution focussed group of head teachers, who meet regularly to evaluate the progress and identify the next steps of our ASG improvement plan ensuring quality learning experiences for all of our pupils are a priority.
