The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has a mission to restore nature across these beautiful counties and empower people to connect with their local wildlife. Our vision is to see ‘more nature everywhere’.
Our expert team work with more than 1,700 volunteers to look after 85 nature reserves and four education centres, run hundreds of amazing events, and campaign to make nature’s recovery a reality.
What will you be doing?
Trustees will contribute to the direction and oversight of an amazing organisation – while being careful not to overstep the line between governance and day to day management. They enjoy working in a team, with a group of like-minded people from different backgrounds.
Being a trustee requires a range of voluntary work – time preparing for and attending meetings; effort spent understanding the work of the organisation and staying updated on the conservation sector. The precise time commitment varies, but probably averages around 12 days a year.
The Chair needs to devote considerably more time to their leadership role, including acting as line manager and support to the CEO. The Chair’s time commitment is likely to be around 30 or so days per year.
What are we looking for?
BBOWT is seeking to recruit a small number of new trustees to join our Board at the 2021 AGM. All candidates need a commitment to BBOWT’s work, values and future strategy. A new Chair is also being sought as our current Chair is moving away from the BBOWT area.
We are looking for trustees with one or more of the following areas of expertise:
- Campaigning and Advocacy, including influencing local and national government policy
- Senior local government experience e.g. in planning or policy
- Digital / IT
- Agriculture / land management
Essential criteria - you are:
- Eligible under charity law to act as a Trustee
- A member of BBOWT (or will become one)
- A confident user of email and the internet
- Confident in communicating your views and making collective, impartial decisions
- Able to objectively analyse information, ask questions, and debate and provide challenge when necessary
- Able to show some records of behaviours consistent with Nolan’s Seven Principles of Public Life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership
- A team player, able to build mutually respectful relationships with others
- Willing to act as an organization champion
- Essential criteria in addition, if applying to be Chair of the Board, that you:
- Have senior leadership experience, preferably gained from running a significant organisation
- Have a strategic approach
- Have past experience of chairing
- Are happy to act as a spokesperson, ambassador and advocate for BBOWT
Desirable criteria for trustees - you are:
- Happy to act as a spokesperson, ambassador and advocate for BBOWT (e.g., at events, on social media)
- Able to help develop the Trust’s networks with key partners, funders, donors and other stakeholder groups
We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic people. These demographics are underrepresented on our Board of Trustees.

Trustees attend 4 Board Meetings, 2 away days, the AGM and any committees they are involved in. Meetings are a mixture of face-to-face and by Zoom

Applications are asked to submit a covering letter with their CV by Monday 10th May. The cover letter should set out why you are interested in the role and how you meet the relevant role description. Applicants will be reviewed by the Nominations Committee on 17 May 2021. Short-listed applicants will be invited for an informal interview on the 24th May (the majority of candidates) or the afternoon of the 8th June. We hope that this will be in person at The Lodge in Littlemore, Oxford but if necessary, it will be by Zoom.
