Head of Group SEO

Responsible To: Director of Performance Optimisation

Department: Multi-Channel

Location: Bury



This is a fantastic opportunity to work for the UKs leading and largest retail Group, this role requires a leader in SEO with the ability to drive forward change, build key strategies and be successful in implementing and delivering them to achieve both KPI's and development objectives.

Job Role

This covers all aspects of SEO both content and technical, combined with a strong understanding of commercials and targets.

As Head of SEO you will be charged with continuously improving the channel, delivering best in class., taking ownership of all projects and driving these forwards to achieve key objectives.

Whilst the role involves growing the team in experience and expertise it is also being an integral team member yourself; handling requests and provide recommendations to the internal and external stakeholders. This part of the work is alongside the management of the team, and other duties and is a central part of the job.

Key Accountabilities

Time management - Managing and prioritising time for yourself and other members of the team time to ensure work is correctly prioritised and delivered

People Management - You will be responsible for managing a specialist team and developing their experience and skillset

Responsibility of team output - This role requires an experienced person who understands the process and the desired outcomes of any piece of strategy work who can then translate this to the team for delivery

Responsible for complex requests and solutions - As the most senior person within the SEO team you are expected to support the stakeholders across the Group and ensure Head of Depts are fully up to speed with SEO roadmaps/projects.

Responsible for Growth - As a Head of the channel, you will be expected to take ownership of performance for your channel and ensure targets are met.

Delivering Technical Excellence - The SEO team are responsible for the creation and delivery of technical recommendations and for the identification for opportunities across the websites. Within this role you will be responsible for leading the team ensuring that the technical excellence is paramount. To do this effectively the following attributes are required:

· A clear understanding and vision of what you want to deliver

· Effective in communicating complex requests and solutions to the team to delegate and diffuse delivery

· Informing on the correct data and tools to define a recommendation which is backed by background data and further best-practice information

Delivering Content Excellence - Within this role you will be responsible for leading content strategies focusing upon the most commercially important destinations. Developing, maintaining and implementing acquisition/aggregation strategies and building an effective blogger/outreach strategy for the Group.

Desired Experience

· A proven track record of managing multi-tiered teams and people across all with different levels of seniority

· Experience in managing multiple projects

· Vast experience and knowledge of technical factors and how they affect SEO such as HTML, CCS, Flash, Java, AJAX and other web development considerations.

· Experience of being the 'go-to' person when it comes to technical SEO related questions by the wider business, being the thought leader on relevant subjects

· A proven track record of developing and growing a team significantly

Essential Skills

· At least 5-7 years' experience either client or agency side

· Thorough understanding of c languages and mark-ups

o HTML5, JavaScript (including jQuery and AJAX), CSS3, Structured Data

· Thorough understanding of server-side languages and protocols

o Understanding of how servers operate,

o Understanding of how a server communicates with browsers and search engines

o Understanding of at least one server-side language, such as Ruby, ASP, .NET, PHP and/or others

· Effective organisation and the ability to delegate efficiently

· Understand specialist SEO tools to perform the following tasks:

o HTTP header requests & responses, DOM manipulation post-render, Site crawls, Technical analysis, Mobile and Site Speed optimisation, Voice Search

· Commercial understanding
