Ward Coordinator

Salary: £25,000 pa
Based at British Home, Crown Lane, London SW16 3JB

Reports to Home Manager
5 days over 7-day period, as agreed with the manager
25 days annual leave

Main responsibilities
  • Co-ordinate the deployment of care and nursing staff across British Home to maximise support for all residents, while ensuring that staffing costs remain within budget
  • Continually review staffing levels in line with British Home's service models and resident dependency tools
  • Work with Senior Managers to identify efficiencies within staff rotas, while ensuring that quality of service is maintained to a high standard
  • Oversee recruitment, allocation and development of our bank of temporary staff
  • Manage and negotiate contracts with temporary agency staff providers, ensuring best value for British Home.To support the Director of Care and Home Manager in providing leadership to the care and support staff
  • Lead, support and facilitate the nursing and medical needs of residents
  • Perform in accordance with standards agreed with the Home Manager and the Registered Provider and follow legislative requirements, relevant regulations and best practice

Role Specific Duties
  • To work closely with HR and the appropriate heads of department in the process of recruiting and retaining clinical staff
  • To lead on the recruitment utilization and ongoing support of Bank staff
  • To lead on effective rostering by ensuring shifts distributed have been evaluated against the clinical care of residents without supervision and incorporating the standards and philosophy of each specialist unit
  • Maintain allocated budget expenditure to ensure it does not exceed the allocated budget each month and year for specified areas
  • To ensure each unit has an agreed total number of staff and skill mix for each duty as jointly agreed with the Director of Care/Registered Manager
  • Lead on the management of the People Planner rostering central system, including the inputting of up to date information - including actuals and reporting from the system to demonstrate effective use of resources
  • To be responsible for the administration and maintenance of agency usage and e-rostering
  • To lead on training staff as part of their induction to use the self-service interface.
  • Assess and review all current 'custom and practice' agreements
  • To liaise with training lead around the provision and monitoring of training for clinical staff
  • To liaise with clinical lead nurses around the provision and monitoring of clinical staff appraisals and quarterly supervisions

  • Develop effective working relationships with all employees within the service
  • Be proactive and provide guidance, support and leadership to staff
  • Work in cooperation with members of the multi-disciplinary teams to maximise opportunities for people in the service
  • Understand when external healthcare support is required, and liaise with them to ensure best outcomes for people that use services
  • Identify information, concerns and ideas for improvement and share them with senior management of the service

  • Ensure that developments in best practice are properly disseminated

Personal Responsibilities
  • Be registered with the relevant body and work within the associated Code of Conduct
  • Obtain the relevant qualifications required to work in the deputising role
  • Understand the regulatory framework that governs the service, including the role of CQC and their requirements
  • Attend statutory training and any other training as directed by the management
  • Understand, share and implement all policies and procedures relevant to the role
  • Be open to learning opportunities
  • Understand the Health and Safety requirements associated with the role
  • Proficient Written Skills
  • Maintain all Care Plans/care records in accordance with The British Home policy and audit care records following The British Home policy to ensure compliance

  • Clinical Leads need to be able to adapt and address situations quickly
  • Plan, develop, implement and assess approaches to promote health and well-being, whilst recognising and reporting situations where there might be a need for protection
  • Promote the effective resolution of team conflicts
  • Ensure there are always adequate staff with the necessary skills on duty within the unit

Leadership Skills
  • To share in implementing the Quality Assurance system and submission of reports to the deputy manager or other senior staff
  • To monitor the maintenance of daily routines and structures
  • To show the ability to mentor, guide and support staff and therefore increase staff knowledge, skills and improve outcomes for people
