About the Role

The System Operator ensures that Great Britain's gas and electricity is transported safely and efficiently from where it is produced to where it is consumed, balancing supply and demand in real time. As a separate company within the National Grid Group, the Electricity System Operator is neutral within industry and able to facilitate market based solutions that deliver value for consumers. We work with our customers and stakeholders to shape the future of the energy market, providing analysis and insight into the changing nature of energy.

As a Power Systems Engineer working in the Network Development team you will contribute to the overall design and development of the future transmission system through the assessment of network capability and investment options. You will also contribute to the production of the Electricity Ten Year Statement and the Network Options Assessment, associated process and stakeholder engagement.

Key Accountabilties
  • Preparation and publication of the Electricity Ten Year Statement and the Network Options Assessment to satisfy all requirements of license conditions
  • Assessment and verification of options and capabilities for the Network Options Assessment (NOA) satisfying all requirements of license condition
  • Prepare, undertake, and analyse the results of power system analysis to identify network issues and solutions including
  • Thermal loading analysis
  • Steady state and dynamic Voltage assessment
  • Fault level analysis
  • System stability
Technical report writing for internal and external stakeholder consumptionRepresent National Grid ESO on internal and external working groups, seminars and conferencesApplication of process excellence to deliver efficient process and quality outputSupport technical standard and policy reviewsSupport and engage with team
About You

To be successful in this role you will have the following knowledge and experience:
  • Fundamentals of power system planning and operation, both technically and commercially
  • Power system analysis to a good level of competence
  • An understanding of Power Systems Economics and how to apply this in network investment decision making
  • Ability to analyse and present complex issues and understand their impact on National Grid ESO, the Transmission Owners and the industry.
  • Ability to represent National Grid ESO at external meetings and conferences
  • Demonstrated application of commercial frameworks to the design and/or operation of the transmission system
  • Knowledge of key industry frameworks and technical challenges
  • Good level of competence in producing written reports and presentations
  • Experience with data analytics, DPL scripting and Python programming is desirable.
  • Degree level in electrical engineering (or equivalent numerical discipline) or relevant experience

Desirable:
  • Member of relevant professional body, e.g. IET / Institute of Mathematics, and chartered status is desirable

What You Will Get

A competitive salary between £37,300 - £57,000 - dependent on experience
