Job Details

The Abbeyfield  Sidmouth Society, which provides supported accommodation for elderly but  independent people, is looking to recruit a new Chairperson (volunteer Trustee/Director) for its Executive Committee. The current incumbent will be retiring shortly.

Role summary

The chair is required to provide leadership for a small executive committee responsible for 3 houses accommodating 60 residents at a time of change. Enthusiasm and willingness to learn is more important than knowledge of the housing/social field.

Initially a substantial amount of time is anticipated to be necessary to adequately cover induction and a learning process. There after the time needed will be subject to individual work styles and for mutual agreement. The options offered by new technology may be relevant.

Given the Committee’s current age and service profile, it is anticipated  that the make-up of the team will change in the coming months. In fact applications from potential new trustees, including a potential Company Secretary are being sought currently to replace intending retirees. The opportunity exists, therefore, to build a new team.

Person description

Key attributes will be management experience and leadership ability coupled with an appetite for change. Commitment to improving the well-being of the elderly and to the projection within the community of the work of the Society will be important.

Experience in the housing /social field is less important than enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Enthusiasm and energy. Interpersonal skills. Marketing and IT knowledge are helpful.

A personalized induction programme will be drawn up covering both local and national aspects of Abbeyfield.

What's in it for the volunteer?

The new Chairperson will be joining the Society at an exciting time. Future Abbeyfield strategy both nationally and locally is under discussion and he/she will have an opportunity to help shape the future.

Time commitment

Executive Committee members meet every two months with occasional meetings of working groups.

How to apply

Please apply via the Reach platform. Happy to have an informal discussion.

Deadline: 30th April

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.

For volunteers and charities

Whether you are an organisation that wants to find a volunteer with particular skills or a new trustee, or an individual who has a skill you want to offer, you can:

  • make contact and talk through what you're looking for

Other organisations and partners

We also work with other organisations including:

  • businesses, supporting their staff into rewarding volunteer or board positions
