Job Details

Christian Aid has a vision – an end to poverty – and we believe that vision can become a reality. The essential purpose of Christian Aid is to expose the scandal of poverty, to help in practical ways to root it out from the world and to challenge the systems that favour the rich and powerful over the poor and marginalised. We are currently seeking additional Trustees to join our Board to impact our organisation's strategy, goals and direction.

Role summary

If you are inspired by faith to volunteer at senior level for a leading Christian charity operating in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities in 29 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean, then this role could be the perfect role for you.

At Christian Aid, we believe that poverty is an outrage against humanity.  It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their lives. Your role as trustee will guide us as we work together to create impactful partnerships as a leading NGO.

Christian Aid operates through an incorporated charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales and with Companies House.  There are various subsidiary and connected charities which support us.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategy and policy framework of Christian Aid, determining direction and goals; protecting and promoting the identity and values of the charity; and fulfilling our statutory responsibilities.

It collectively holds the Chief Executive and other directors (senior management) accountable, providing constructive challenge where necessary, reporting to the Sponsoring Churches at the Annual General Meeting and promoting Christian Aid externally.

The Board delegates certain functions to sub-committees of trustees. As a trustee, you will be expected to serve on at least one of the sub-committees.

Person description

It would be essential for candidates to have:

• knowledge of the governance obligations and responsibilities of Trustees

• sympathy and support for Christian Aid as a Christian organisation, which works with: churches; ecumenical bodies; local NGOs; organisations of other faiths; and movements which have common values and competence in poverty eradication. Christian Aid values diversity in its Board and welcomes people from all sections of the Christian community.

It would be desirable if candidates also had:

  • knowledge of the workings of NGOs in the UK/Ireland
  • knowledge of the social, cultural, economic and political dimensions of international relief and development
  • experience in an international organisation
  • experience and understanding of diversity, especially in the UK/Ireland context.

In this round of recruitment, we are looking for up to 6 trustees and are particularly interested in candidates with skills and experience in:

  • fundraising or income generation
  • humanitarian and development work
  • HR
  • marketing and digital experience.

The Board is especially keen to invite applications from candidates with current lived experience in the Global South and candidates who will help to ensure that the Board is fully representative of ethnic diversity across the UK.

As a trustee, you will be appointed for an initial four year term, and are eligible to be re-appointed for further terms of office, limited to a maximum of eight consecutive years.

We are open to expressions of interest from persons available to join the Board either in the second half of 2021 or from 2022 onwards.

What's in it for the volunteer?

Over the past two years, we have been through a process of looking back at our history, the world as it is today, and the unique contribution we can bring in changing people’s lives. We have revisited our vision, mission, values, and developed a new global strategic framework - Standing Together: for Dignity, Equality and Justice - that will influence how we make change happen. Join us as a trustee to use your God-given skills and experiences within a forward looking organisation.

Time commitment

Currently all Board meetings are held online. Usually there are four Board meetings a year, including two overnight residential meetings in the UK.

Before you apply

Please apply via the Reach Volunteering site.

We will require a CV and Supporting Statement. Longlisted candidates will be invited to meet a selection panel in May. Thereafter, recommendations for appointment will be proposed to the Board of Trustees and formally ratified at the Annual General Meeting of Sponsoring Churches in November 2021.

Deadline: 18th April

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.

For volunteers and charities

Whether you are an organisation that wants to find a volunteer with particular skills or a new trustee, or an individual who has a skill you want to offer, you can:

  • join the community as a volunteer or as a charity and create a profile
  • explore roles and profiles
  • make contact and talk through what you're looking for
  • make a match.

Our guides and resources help volunteers and good causes make the most of skills-based volunteering.

Other organisations and partners

We also work with other organisations including:

  • businesses, supporting their staff into rewarding volunteer or board positions
  • funders, supporting their grantees.
