About Reach Volunteering

Reach Volunteering is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What will you be doing?

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Reach achieves its core purpose. They strategically oversee the management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Reach has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable Reach to grow and thrive, and through this, the thousands of organisations and volunteers that it serves.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

There is a complete trustee role description in the candidate pack.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board. You do not need previous governance experience – we will provide a full induction and training.

We are particularly interested in applications from people with experience of design-led approaches: expertise in service / sustainable design approaches, centred on user needs within context of the wider ecosphere.

We are committed to bringing equity, diversity and inclusion into the heart of our services and how we operate. Increasing the diversity of our Board is an important step towards this goal. We would especially welcome applications from people from Black, Asian & ethnic minority backgrounds; people with a disability and younger people (under 35 years), who are all under-represented on our Board.

What difference will you make?

A trustee with this expertise would help ensure that Board discussions and decisions are grounded in an understanding of our service design approach. They will support and challenge Reach to remain focused on user needs, and use a robust, iterative, test and learn approach, and also bring an appreciation of the importance of wider system of organisational support within which Reach operates. This will help embed continuous improvement, and ensure that our service is relevant and impactful.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

You will be joining a successful charity with a strong sense of purpose and ambitious plans for the future.

This is what one of our current trustees had to say:

“There is a mutually supportive and respectful relationship between the CEO, staff, volunteers and trustees and this carries through into trustee meetings, which are business-like – occasionally robust – but always friendly and constructive”.

There are five Board meetings annually and a half day strategy session. Ad hoc and occasional support.

How to apply:

Please send a short letter outlining why you are interested in joining our board, your relevant skills and experience (see What we are looking for) and how you think you could apply your skills and experience to strengthen our board. Please also attach a CV or similar (LinkedIn profile, portfolio etc). Applications should be sent to:

If you have any questions prior to making an application or would like to speak to one of our trustees or our CEO please contact Rachel Ord who will arrange this.

Deadline: 3rd March. Interviews will be held weeks commencing 15th and 23rd March.

Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.

What we do

We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.

Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.

Why we do it

Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.

By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.

How we do it

Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities. Find out more about when we charge.

For volunteers and charities

Whether you are an organisation that wants to find a volunteer with particular skills or a new trustee, or an individual who has a skill you want to offer, you can:

  • join the community as a volunteer or as a charity and create a profile
  • explore roles and profiles
  • make contact and talk through what you're looking for
  • make a match.

Our guides and resources help volunteers and good causes make the most of skills-based volunteering.

Other organisations and partners

We also work with other organisations including:

  • businesses, supporting their staff into rewarding volunteer or board positions
  • funders, supporting their grantees.
