Job Details

Our Future Health is the UK's largest ever health research programme; part of the UK's strategic challenge to accelerate the detection of disease. By building a national resource that will be the most detailed picture we've ever had of the UK's health, it will help us detect common diseases earlier and allow more people to live healthier lives for longer. Our Future Health is a new charity that will invite 5 million people from all backgrounds and from right across the UK to take part and become part of a nationwide community of volunteers who want to help improve the health and lives of future generations. By developing a more detailed understanding of what makes certain people more likely to develop a disease - plus what to look out for before any symptoms appear - Our Future Health has the potential to help to develop far more effective approaches to both prevention and treatment.

The role of Senior Data Engineer is an exciting opportunity to join a small team designing and building the data infrastructure and systems to power one of the world's largest long-term population health studies. The role will suit someone who has experience of working with large health datasets, understanding how to structure, store, clean, query and analyse the data. You will help us to design a system which enables complex data linkage and coding, strict privacy and security requirements, and the development of large and varied datasets including genomics.

The environment will be mixed, with external technology suppliers, licensed software as well as from-scratch software development. You will be joining a greenfield project, in at the start, working out how all the pieces fit together. The work will involve technical design and architecture, working with a multidisciplinary in-house team, serving the needs of both the study participants and crucially researchers from industry, charities and academia.

You will also be a key member of the team who will prototype, innovate and solve challenging issues of scale, performance, reach and accessibility across a broad spectrum of society.

Key Responsibilities
  • You will work with the Lead Architect on the data architecture of a platform which will power a large-scale population health research study
  • You will collaborate with colleagues to develop the data architecture, data flows, schemas, storage options
  • You will work closely with clinical data scientists and the science team to agree standards, coding and schemas for our data, with a focus on ensuring clean and interoperable data for research
  • Working with the technology team, you will develop plans with internal and external stakeholders to enable complex data linkage and coding, strict privacy and security requirements, and the storage and access of large and varied datasets including genomics
  • You will work with a smaller multidisciplinary in-house team on experimentation, analysis and investigation of new tools and technologies, serving the needs of both the participants and users in the study and the researchers working with the data.

RequirementsThe role will be varied and evolve over time, so a breadth of expertise is essential.
  • Experience with large scale health data from a software / data / architecture perspective is required (this could be clinical data, wearables, consumer apps, genomics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of relevant standards such as FHIR, ICD-10, SNOMED-CT, OMOP
  • Experience in the design and deployment of complex data schemas and flows
  • Familiarity with a variety of database, data warehouse and big data systems, for example NoSQL, SQL, graph, column stores
  • Experience with data science or machine learning environments
  • Understanding and working knowledge of information governance, regulation and compliance
  • Excellent communicator in person, in writing, when presenting, when creating diagrams, specifications and documentation

In addition, any of these would be helpful
  • Experience working in a regulated environment with standards such as ISO27001, CyberEssentials and NHS Data Security & Protection Toolkit
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure offerings across AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Background in software engineering
