Operating within the Engineering team, the Chief Engineer Transmissions will function as a project leader for Ricardo Shanghai's customer projects. They will be responsible for leading projects completely independent and be accountable for project timing, budget, technical quality, commercial and customer satisfaction. The role covers a broad range of transmission and driveline products, but a focus on dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHT), electric drive units (EDU) and automated manual transmissions (AMT).

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the provision of technical and commercial leadership in proposal preparation and development. They will be comfortable in meeting new customers and developing relationships, so that they are able to work closely with commercial and sector lead teams to win and deliver transmissions business.

In the Chief Engineer role the precise level of responsibility will depend on your background experience.

Working Location: relocating to Shanghai, China is our preferrence



Key Responsibilities

· Chief Engineer responsibility for large design-oriented transmission and driveline projects

· Leads major multi-functional transmission / driveline projects. Responsible for overall delivery, technical or commercial aspects accordingly.

· Technical leadership of assigned transmissions projects:

· Take responsibility for the quality of work undertaken and for the technical delivery to the client to time, cost and quality targets

· Plan delivery of engineering tasks in detail and ensure the efficient communication of this plan between the engineering leaders, project manager and the client

· Take responsibility for overall specifications and product definitions

· Checking and validation of engineering delivery from relevant mechanical engineering departments

· Manage project scope and change control

· Resolve cross-functional issues at project level

· Work closely with all engineering disciplines ensuring processes are followed

· Support to the development of transmission & driveline proposals, including definition of the technical approach, project timing, task definition and costing

· Leading technical authority for the company in transmissions, shaping company position on subject and supporting the development of product offerings

· Mentoring junior engineers and identifying requirements for skills development

· Support the development of team capability growth plans and talent identification to build local project delivery capability

· Developing and maintaining client network and relationships with senior level customer counterparts (Chief Engineer level and above)

· Responsible for all aspects of project delivery of self and team / department.

Everyday tasks will include:

· Leading projects as project leader

· Reviewing technical delivery to guarantee project quality and functionality

· Reviewing and steering project budget and timing

· Meeting project customer discussing technical and commercial topics and guaranteeing customer satisfaction

· Internal alignment regarding process, documentation and tools

· External meetings with current customers and leads supporting business development through technical expertise and supporting proposal generation

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

Experience

· Fully qualified with substantial experience in professional field in addition to technical and commercial management experience

· Highly competent in the application of a comprehensive range of transmission and driveline fundamental principles including complex techniques across a wide and often unpredictable range of contexts

· A strong technical background in at least one area of transmission specialisation, but some experience of "job rotation" across other functions will be highly appreciated

· A track record of product development within the automotive industry

· A proven ability to lead and manage an engineering team to specified deadlines and achieve required timescales

· Ability to provide technical oversight and direction on multi-discipline projects

· Strong experience of interfacing with Clients

· Experience in business development, including definition of the appropriate project approach and delivery model

· Carry out technical training internally and externally in area of specialism

· Excellent communication skills, dealing with other employees and external clients in English (Chinese is also an advantage)

Knowledge

· Degree qualified engineer with a minimum of 10 years, typically 15 year of industry experience in automotive mechanical engineering

· Broad range of mechanical engineering knowledge, specializing in at least one sector or system

· Literate in IT systems (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

· An interest in all aspects of the automotive industry with a desire to maintain a strong background on latest technology updates presented across the worldwide markets
