NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. There are 10 GP Practices and 4 Islands with Nursing cover. There are approximately 5000 people under the age of 18 years.
The job of Consultant Community Paediatrician is for someone who wishes to practice a wide ranging role and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused clinician. You will build on the several years' great work of a small multi-disciplinary department headed by a GPwSI and supported by Consultant Paediatrician's based at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. The intimated retirement of the GPwSI has led to this opportunity.
Shetland has a wide team of practitioners from Primary Care, CAMHS, paediatric nurses, learning disability nurse, AHPs, education, social work, Police, third sector organisations and secondary care who all have responsibility for the care of babies, children and young people. We work closely with NHS Grampian for the provision of secondary care level paediatrics. However, we recognise the benefit of having a local medical lead for paediatrics.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Agreeing, formalising and embedding emergency care protocols including training and education for generalist staff
- Supporting children with complex care needs in the community
- Developing shared care pathways for specialist Child Protection assessments
- Supporting the development of a neuro-developmental pathway with the CAMHS Consultant and wider team
- Oversight role in the governance of the shared care services with NHS Grampian e.g auditing pathways with the local team where children transfer for specialist care.
The successful candidates would undertake regular weeks' of work in Aberdeen to maintain their skills in a large, teaching hospital. There would be the opportunity to undertake research as part of the Medical School's Child Health Department. There will be no on-call commitment as acute paediatrics and neonates are managed by the general teams within the Gilbert Bain Hospital. Children requiring inpatient admission are transferred to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital.
Remuneration will be commensurate with the Scottish Consultant Scale at 0.6WTE. In addition, the post holder will have a reasonable training allowance to cover the cost to attend suitable courses and conferences. A generous relocation package is also available.
Closing date: 31st January 2021
Interviews will be held via Teams - date to be agreed
