Our client can demonstrate almost half a century's expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems for a diverse range of industry sectors and are regarded by many in the industry as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the whole of the UK. As a result of continued success and a planned programme of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced Controls and Software Manager to complement their established and successful Leicester based team and deliver machine control system solutions for an array of special purpose automation machinery projects.

Tasked with managing all aspects of the design, development and delivery of machine control and safety system projects on time, within budget and to the required national & international standards and machinery directives, the successful Controls and Software Manager candidate will coordinate the activities of a team responsible for writing & developing software, PLC & HMI coding and undertaking electrical machine automation design (using ePlan) and the creation of machine control system solutions for a range of special purpose automated machinery projects.

Responsible for leading, training and developing the team to ensure their ability to deliver work at the highest standards and consistently meet project requirements, you will provide leadership and continual development of company control system platforms including Build Assist, Build Assist Automation and others, to identify and implement efficiencies through standardisation, cost-down initiatives and other best practice methods, driving the development of common best practice approaches to writing software and creating electrical documentation and providing technical leadership with emphasis on control systems, but also with regards to machine automation.

You will proactively liaise with customers on all aspects of projects and control systems, including travel to site as required, and will provide support to the sales team regarding leads and automation solutions quotations, so excellent communication skills at all levels are essential for the position, and at times where additional sub-contract or external control system partner resources may be required, you will identify and select these as appropriate whilst ensuring on-time and in-budget delivery.

Other duties will include (but not be limited to) ensuring the delivery of associated electrical documentation (circuit diagrams, cable schedules, installation documents and BOM's) and being responsible for the correct selection and procurement of all components. You will ensure best practice design reviews are carried out during electrical system design, safety system design, software design and coding and that clear, concise and accurate technical documentation is maintained at all times.

You will also ensure that ALL projects are fully tested prior to dispatch and will develop the correct proof of testing as required by applicable standards and legislative requirements for machine commissioning, development and testing including FAT and SAT, following projects through to installation, commissioning and ongoing support of automation projects and supporting the team in these areas.

To be considered for this varied and challenging Controls and Software Manager role, you will essentially demonstrate at least 7 years previous experience of successfully delivering machine control system projects gained within an automation machinery control systems environment and managing an associated control systems team, and will realistically be degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant electrical, electronic or control system engineering discipline.

Excellent communication and customer facing skills are critical for the position along with a flexible approach to travel and working hours, with demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the various national European and international electrical standards for machine design and machine safety systems also being required. You will be proficient in conducting machine risk assessments and ensuring compliance with safety standards including Sistema or equivalent, with knowledge of ePlan and software design and PLC coding experience (Omron, Siemens, B&R, Mitsubishi, Rockwell) proving distinctly advantageous, as would experience of integrating Scara, Delta and 6-axis robots.
