Lead Mechanical Engineer
£50,000 - £60,000 plus employee benefits
Mechanical engineer to take a key role in the mechanical engineering team. Providing mechanical design, drawings, and analysis to support the product development. Leading others in the team to deliver designs and process improvement.
Understand the customer needs to support design decisions and interpret the impact of customer requirements on mechanical specifications.
Support customer engineering liaison and customer deliverables, alerting the team to possible risks and opportunities.
Lead the mechanical design work to deliver functional, electrical, thermal, environmental, structural and EMC requirements.
Produce mechanical designs for electronic PCBs, including board profiles, ICDs, flex-circuits, connector alignment and component clearance.
Design parts for thermal, structural and aerothermal performance. Support others in the team on these design principles.
Author engineering change notices to meet configuration control process requirements. Review and approve ECNs from others.
Produce production standard 3D CAD models and drawings (to BS8888) to using Solidworks. Review and approve CAD documents from others.
Lead the mechanical design for manufacture principles for a range of manufacturing methods for all team designs, supporting others in the team to improve their knowledge. Work from experience and with suppliers to improve designs for manufacturability.
Perform tolerance analysis to ensure design clearances and fits.
Perform and/or lead subcontracted analysis of thermal management solutions: heat-sinks, forced air cooling, liquid cooling and heat-pipes, for product verification. Support others in the team with basic design analysis.
Perform and/or lead subcontracted analysis of mechanical structures (FEA) to support design iteration. Support others in the team with basic design analysis.
Lead mechanical and environmental testing (Shock, Vibration, HALT and HASS)
Lead the team to manufacture, assemble and integrate prototypes to capture lessons learnt and feed them back into designs.
Work as part of small teams to deliver mechanical development projects on time and to budget. Leading and support other members of the team to deliver.
Capture requirements and distil them into a written specification. Approve the mechanical requirements and specifications for the team.
Support of the wider technical deliverables required for product development, such as test equipment design, lifecycle management, methods development, peer reviews, procurement support and lab testing.
Work with the engineering teams across multiple disciplines to integrate technology requirements into the systems, software, electrical and RF design.
Take responsibility for own projects and delivery to tight timescales, communicating through plans, presentations and written reports.
Review and approve mechanical project work from the team and present to the wider engineering group where required.
Manage and lead small engineering teams to deliver internal and external projects.
Manage suppliers to deliver subcontracted designs, manufacturing, assembly, analysis and test (in conjunction with the operations team).
5+ years in mechanical design for electromechanical products
Excellent knowledge of Configuration Control processes and Product Lifecycle Management
Product development of RF communications electronics.
A good first or Upper 2nd Class degree (BEng/MEng) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work-based qualifications.
