The Avenues Trust Group works with people who are disabled, autistic or have complex support needs, helping them to enjoy fulfilling lives in the community. We do this by supporting and promoting their intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual welfare, with 1,700 staff supporting around 650 people across our subsidiaries in the South East, West Midlands, London and East of England.

 

What will you be doing?

We take great pride in our positive attitude to risk, which enables people to actively engage in their communities, and really experience life.

But we always want to do things better, and as part of our development we are now looking for new trustees.

Our trustee group has to reflect the diversity of the people we support and the communities in which we work, and we welcome and encourage applicants from all backgrounds. We are looking for people interested in becoming general Trustees, and some who have interest in becoming Chair further on down the line.

Duties include;

  • Managing the charity’s resources responsibly
  • Ensuring the charity is accountable
  • Ensuring the charity is carrying out its purposes legally and for the public benefit

What are we looking for?

The following characteristics, knowledge and experience (or commitment to gain them) would be advantageous to the role of chair:

  • high level of understanding and interest in the issues the charity seeks to address/ represent;
  • a commitment to the values and principles of the charity;
  • strong business and financial acumen;
  • experience of committee work;
  • highly developed interpersonal and communication skills;
  • proven leadership skills;
  • strong organisational skills;
  • ability to understand complex strategic issues, analyse and resolve difficult problems;
  • sound, independent judgement, common sense and diplomacy;
  • high standards of personal integrity and probity;
  • politically astute, with the ability to grasp relevant issues and understand relationships between interested parties;
  • clear understanding, and acceptance, of the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of trustees;
  • sound knowledge and commitment to good governance;
  • sufficient time and commitment to fulfil the role; around 15 hours per month of Avenues business.

As well as a shared commitment to our vision for people, successful applicants will need to have experience in one of the areas below and are willing to undertake some committee chair duties. Have not been a chair before? That's ok as we will provide chair development.

Trustees are responsible for providing appropriate oversight, governance and leadership to the charity in the pursuit of its strategies to fulfill its charitable purposes.

Commitment:

0-5 hours / month. An initial 3-year term, this may be extended for two further three-year terms.
