Centrally based, this pupil referral unit (PRU) caters for Primary and Secondary aged pupils in the borough of Hackney. The school are looking for an SEMH Teaching Assistant to start immediately.

We are looking for an SEMH Teaching Assistant with strong emotional intelligence, good academic backgrounds and dynamic, engaging personalities. Working in a PRU requires resilience and exceptional relationship building skills. Every day will be different and your success in the role will depend on your ability to form strong working relationships with pupils. Education and training in Psychology, Counselling and Youth Work are highly desired but not essential.

Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) are locally funded schools set up to ensure students who have fallen outside mainstream and SEN provisions still receive an education. This could be due to exclusion from mainstream or be due to illness. The education and training offered to students is adapted to suit each individual child's needs. SEMH Teaching Assistants play a vital role with 1:1 support and small group interventions.

The SEMH Teaching Assistant will be working with pupils in KS4. The Key Stage 4 Provision recently opened in September last year and they are based in a new building on site in Hackney. At present there are 2 small, year 11 classes, one with 5 pupils and the other with 4 pupils. There is also a Year 10 class with 8 pupils. These small classes also enable social distancing measures to be upheld. Breaks are also staggered which reduces congestion in hallways. The school day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 4pm, with staff meetings until 4.30pm on Wednesday.

The SEMH Teaching Assistant role:
  • Working with pupils in KS4
  • Providing in class support as well as running small group interventions
  • Supporting the recovery curriculum - enabling pupils to catch up due to COVID-19 disruptions
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills required
  • Experience supporting pupils with challenging behaviour highly desired
  • Positive attitude and resilient nature
  • Be able to travel to Hackney or be locally based

The School:
  • Pupil referral unit for Primary and Secondary Pupils
  • Pupils aged 5-16 years' old
  • OFSTED rated GOOD
  • Based in Hackney
  • Currently around 50 pupils on site, capacity for 200
  • Education and training provided in de-escalation and behaviour management strategies
