Avantor Services provides a broad variety of on-site Laboratory Services for major

pharmaceutical customers and works collaboratively with the client to provide resource

to deliver core scientific activities. AstraZeneca (AZ) requires an individual to join the Avantor Services Leadership team to support multiple AZ R&D groups as a Senior Lab Manager (SLM). Involvement with the senior team in designing a leading edge solution means this is a fast paced and diverse role, and will give the successful candidate an opportunity to advance their skills/experience in an exciting, evolving business area.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day operational management of the building's laboratories and will have both direct & indirect line management responsibilities. Additionally you will act as Single Point of Contact (SPOC) on behalf of the wider YourFM team.You will be delivering sustainable, integrated laboratory services for a developing region by driving service excellence, quality and performance of our services and their development in accordance with customer requirements and legislation utilising LEAN principles. Together with your team, you will work with a wide range of contacts including customers, suppliers, logistics and commercial colleagues, maintaining a consistently high level of customer focus to achieve our strategic objectives.

Specific Role Accountabilities

·Lead and manage Cambridge teams of Avantor associates in both Lab Support and Materials Management, helping them perform at their best through motivation and development

·Responsible for planning the aims, objectives and priorities of work area (and cascading to team and colleagues as appropriate), ensuring a robust business continuity plan is in place at all times

·Accomplish Human Resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching/mentoring, communicating job expectations, monitoring, appraising/dismissing, improvement plans, reviewing job contributions, enforcing policies/procedures, etc.

·Project leading, driving, delivering and embedding transformational change into the operation to ensure best in class service and performance, capitalising on business opportunities and delivering value for the client

·Establishing and maintaining management risk, control, and information systems, ensuring performance and compliance targets are met

·Achieving operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews

·Contribute and input into the development and execution of the strategy for the Avantor Services business to deliver sustainable growth year on year

·Continuous improvements including innovation, LEAN principles, root cause analysis, etc.

·Successfully improve senior level networks through building relationships, delivery of thought leadership, possessing charisma and great influencing skills

·Actively partner with other FM service providers, ensuring a seamless customer experience

·Act as Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for the Hodgkin facility

·Regularly meet with individual customer groups to review our service and act on feedback

·Ensure that all environmental, health and safety related aspects (and required trainings) are in line with both customer and Avantor Services expectations

·Creation, maintenance and updating relevant documentation in support of service delivery, compliance and training

Laboratory Management

·Day to day operational management of a defined laboratory support, ensuring quality, compliance and Health & Safety are aligned with AZ policies, procedures and standards

·Ensure the laboratories maintain operational efficiency by liaising with other suppliers, planning preventative and scheduled maintenance regimes with minimal impact to daily operations - this includes facilitating/coordinating laboratory closures for both planned & responsive works

·Participation in health & safety/compliance audits, GEMBA walks and self-inspections, performing root cause analysis and implementation of resultant actions

·Act as the first point of contact for all AZ research staff to deal with problems within the laboratories and act as the face of Avantor Services in meetings and audits

·Monitor and track spend aligned to capital investments and laboratory consumables

·Active involvement in Change Control processes to ensure safe and effective laboratory change occurs

  • Multiple years' experience working in a laboratory environment ideally with previous proven management and leadership
  • Experience working as a service provider preferably within a matrix organization
  • Contractual management and establishing new business
  • A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of SHE requirements in a laboratory environment and preferably an IOSH certification
  • Knowledge of GLS and GxP regulations and audit requirements
  • A good team worker demonstrating loyalty and commitment to the organization and team members
  • To be flexible with working hours when required in order to deliver the service required to our customers
  • Self-motivated, energetic, dependable with and a clear attention to detail
