About the Department

Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV, 400kV and HVDC electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.

What is the Role?

The SHE Transmission network is undergoing fundamental change through the connection of high volumes of renewable generation, recent introduction of HVDC and FACTS devices and connection of offshore windfarms via 220kV AC cables; as such we have a position for an experienced HVDC Subject Matter Expert (SME) as we further develop our HVDC infrastructure.

Reporting to the Head of HVDC, the HVDC SME role is to provide significant technical knowledge, expertise and support in HVDC technology required by SHE Transmission to design, construct, commission and modify and operate the HVDC Transmission network. This will include writing and updating specifications, reviewing and proposing new technologies, witnessing HVDC Main Plant Apparatus FAT and SAT, assisting the Design Authority with design reviews and providing specialist technical input and support to Project Engineering and Operations. This could involve the review of project specific scope documents or the review of contractor proposals.

The HVDC Subject Matter Expert will work with the existing HVDC Project and Operations team on the whole HVDC project lifecycle in all matters relating to HVDC projects including stage 1 and 2 commissioning and the ongoing Operation of HVDC assets including annual maintenance shutdowns.

What do I need?

To be considered for the role of HVDC SME you will be able to demonstrate an expert knowledge of HVDC technology and general transmission engineering in accordance with governing requirements such as the Grid Code and SQSS. You will ideally be a CEng qualified Electrical Engineer.

Providing technical reports and reviewing technical status reports from 3rd parties, undertaking project reviews, fault finding and problem solving and developing technical risk registers is an integral part of the role along with ensuring relevant Health and Safety risks are identified, made known to the HVDC Project and Operational teams and properly managed, therefore demonstrable experience of this is required. You will have extensive experience in a key role on other HVDC projects from design through to commissioning and handover into Operations.

You will also maintain a Competence Matrix for SHE Transmission, which supports maintenance of a sufficiently competent and experienced Technical team, provides clear succession planning, and provides clear technical career paths in SHE Transmission. Therefore prior experience of staff development/coaching and or mentoring is essential.
