We are looking for a General Counsel to join the IET family!

You'll be an experienced, professional who is qualified in English law. Your role will involve providing high quality legal advice, analysis and leadership on all aspects of the IET's charitable, commercial and international activities. Your role will be to take a strategic review of all legal, and the majority of compliance, activity in conjunction with the current and future operational requirements of the IET.
As a natural influencer you will be able to build effective stakeholder relationships at all levels, including providing legal leaderships with a senior management team. You will lead an in-house capability that delivers an efficient and effective service for our people.

·Lead the legal & compliance team in providing advice and training to enable internal stakeholders, Board and Board Committees to take business decisions in respect of legal requirements or constraints and with understanding and control of the risks.
·Participate in key discussions at Executive Committee level.
·Review the legal structures and compliance mechanisms in the UK and overseas and implement any changes required to align the IET with its compliance responsibilities and obligations under the law, regulation and other applicable codes.
·Ensure that an appropriate risk management framework is in place and consistently utilised to mitigate legal and other risks effectively.
·Source, instruct and manage the relationship with appropriate external legal advisers as appropriate.
·Ensure the IET delivers its regulatory and legal responsibilities by monitoring compliance with charity regulations and working with the Director of Governance and External Engagement in providing assurance to IET Trustees.
·Alert internal stakeholders to changes in legislation, regulation or case law which are relevant to their activities or the IET's objectives, create or update relevant policies and implement change.
·Manage and monitor the databases of significant contracts, and ensure that signed documents are kept securely and their terms are easily retrievable.
·Lead the oversight and management of the IET's member disciplinary process.
·Review the extent to which the IET's intellectual property is protected, and implement any changes and amendments identified.
·Contribute to the preparation of draft legislation as required.
·Work with the IET's Data Protection Officer and the Financial Controller on compliance with data protection legislation and financial compliance.
·Draft and negotiate contracts as appropriate.
·Supervise the Legal and Contracts Manager and the Compliance and Risk Management OfficerKey Skills
- Qualified in English Law with post qualification experience in a commercial role.
- Experience of providing legal leadership within a senior management team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, encouraging participation and knowledge sharing with other stakeholders.
- Strong commitment to professionalism
- Excellent writing and presentation skills
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex information and to present results and advice clearly and effectively
- Substantial knowledge of current legal affairs and the ability to apply these within a commercial and charity environment.
- Knowledge of Charity law.
- Ability to travel when required.
- Knowledge of commercial and legal processes beyond UK, preferably in one or more of China (including Hong Kong), India and the USA.
- Experience of working across a multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder organization with experience of matrix management.
