About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting scientists and engineers world-wide. STFC's ISIS facility is a leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level. Within this department the ISIS User Programme Software group plays an integral role in maintaining and producing the software required to support the scientific activities in the laboratory.

About the role

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to provide excellent first line software support to our customers and project support to our software project managers. The role will be based in a small supportive ISIS software development team at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford. Much of the software is web-based and we also use SharePoint. We are looking for an individual who is very comfortable using a computer. Specific training in tools required to do the role will be provided as necessary.

You will work alongside software engineers and report to a senior software engineer. You will also be required to work with a range of people including scientists, users, technical staff, and administrative staff. The software and projects you will assist with lie at the heart of many scientific activities at the laboratory. You will support and help to maintain existing systems, and help us deliver new software. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a software development team without requiring any advanced computing qualifications or significant experience.

Some key responsibilities include:
  • Deliver excellent customer service to our internal and external customers by email, by phone and in person.
  • Manage the support 'inbox' and calls by identifying, registering, and categorizing incidents. Gather information to enable incident resolution and promptly allocate incidents as appropriate. Maintain record and advises relevant people of actions taken.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of issues relating to applications. Assist with specified maintenance procedures

About you

You will be qualified to GCSE level, or equivalent, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will have experience in using Microsoft Office programs and have an enthusiasm for computers and computing. We are looking for someone with previous experience in a customer facing role, with the ability to work under pressure whilst still maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. You will have a proactive approach to finding solutions and be a fast learner with interest in developing new skills.
