Trustee with Military Experience
Carer Support Wiltshire (CSW) is a local charity supporting carers in Wiltshire. They help them to access services, information, education and training, and breaks from their caring role. They work to ensure carers in Wiltshire have a voice in policy making and planning for services, and work with health and social care professionals and employers to develop best practice.
CSW has undergone a transformation in recent years, created from the merging of four smaller district charities to form the large county wide organisation which today supports around 12,000 carers. They are looking for Volunteer Trustees to join their Board.
The Trustee role will have a significant impact on the organisation’s ability to continue its work. Having recently won a new contract to support military and ex-military personnel, CSW is keen to ensure the success of the project by bringing military expertise on-board. In addition to the recent appointment of Dr Andrew Murrison as a Patron of CSW and expert in the field of health in serving and ex-servicemen and women, the board is looking to build on this expertise with the appointment of a trustee with military expertise.
- Keeping the Board informed about its duties and responsibilities, particularly with regard to how the organisation can better reach out to and support military and ex-military carers.
- Advising on the implications of strategic plans with relation to our Military carers contract as well as the overarching organisational strategy.
- Working with the chief executive and board of trustees to identify key risks and ensure that there is an appropriate risk management strategy in place.
- Actively participate as a key member of the Quality & Policy Subcommittee of the Board.
- Preparation for board meetings and constructively challenging assumptions.
- Experience of working in the military or working closely with military personnel (Essential).
- Expertise or experience regarding the difficulties faced by military and ex-military servicemen and women, both during and post-career. (Essential).
- Commitment to Carer Support Wiltshire and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort (Essential).
- Strategic vision, good judgement and ability to think creatively (Essential).
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team (Essential).
- Adherence to Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership (Essential).
- Current or past experience of caring (Desirable)
What impact the opportunity will have?

What’s in it for the volunteer?
CSW is entering an exciting new phase, building new projects, diversifying income sources in its goal of ensuring Wiltshire carers are well supported. The Trustee will play a significant role in all of this and undoubtedly it is an opportunity which offers the trustee a wealth of experience and knowledge in the carer support sector.
The average time commitment of these roles will be one day per month. This includes 5 full board meetings per year whilst subcommittees meet quarterly. There is one trustee away day per year and a number of events which require the attendance of staff, volunteers and trustees. All successful candidates are expected to sit on the relevant sub-committee which, in this case, is the Quality & Policy Subcommittee. Trustees should also be prepared to contribute their expertise on an ad-hoc basis depending on the needs of the charity at a given time.
CSW is always open to discussion regarding timings of board meetings to ensure that all trustees are able to contribute fully, irrespective of their current commitments and employment status.

Whilst CSW is focusing its search on trustees with current experience in the skill areas outlined above, it will also welcome applications from volunteers with other relevant skills and from individuals with backgrounds and experience currently under-represented on the Board.
