Are you a socially motivated story-teller? Are you confident supporting people of all ages and backgrounds to share their stories? StepChange, the UK's leading debt advice charity, is recruiting a Case Study Officer to join its external affairs team based in central London.

As Case Study Officer you will source stories from people who have been helped by StepChange and support them in telling their story to raise awareness of the charity. You will also work with teams across the organisation to make sure that these real-life experiences are at the heart of everything we do.

Raising awareness of StepChange's work ensures that more people who need debt advice can get the support they need across the UK.

Our vision

Every year we help 650,000 people to resolve their debt problems and rebuild their lives. We employ over 1,500 colleagues and in our 26-year history we've helped millions of people on their journey to becoming debt free.

Right now, we're working to deliver an ambitious four-year strategy which will see us helping more people, responding to changing client needs, and working closely with our partners to reduce the harm of problem debt.

What you will be doing

This is a new role that will require the successful candidate to source and write up client stories for a variety of teams across the organisation. The post holder will also work with a range of internal stakeholders to create, maintain and update processes around safeguarding, recording data and sourcing stories. The successful applicant should have a strong ability to empathise with personal stories, excellent verbal and written communication skills and a background in maintaining and developing a case study function within a charity or equivalent organisation.

This is a crucial role that gives our clients a chance to share their experiences and make their voices heard in our work to combat problem debt. The role sits within the external affairs directorate and is managed by the Media and PR Manager. The role will require some UK travel.

Key accountabilities
  • Work with a range of stakeholders to deliver cross-organisational processes and procedures that ensure the efficient and smooth running of a case studies service, including how to find, share and manage case study relationships
  • Deliver appropriate case study stories to meet the objectives of a wide range of teams, including media, marketing policy and campaigns, social media and website.
  • Work with teams and colleagues across StepChange to establish new avenues for sourcing case studies

  • Develop information and feedback loops with clients who do become involved as case study volunteers, for example newsletters and/or surveys
  • Ensure that the case study service complies with all relevant data protection and safeguarding legislation, regulation and industry best practice
  • When required, provide case studies reactively for broadcast and print media requests
  • Regular involvement in projects, developing strong internal stakeholder relationships and cross-functional working practices to ensure delivery timescales are achieved
  • Provide creative input and play a full part in the definition of agreed content initiatives in line with media and PR strategic goals
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the broad scope of debt legislation and debt advice policy
  • Adhere to the Charity's policies and procedures and undertake any other duties commensurate with the role

Experience and knowledge
  • Degree-level education in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience
  • Previous experience interviewing and interacting with clients
  • Experience of working with teams from across an organisation
  • A passion for storytelling and experience of applying this to a role
