As an organisation dedicated to the support of carers, having expertise in health and social care is absolutely essential to the board. In recent years there has been a significant upheaval in the provision of health and care services with the drive to greater integration and place-based commissioning.  There have been changes too, in the Care Quality Commission (CQC) impacting across the sector. It is anticipated that further changes in legislation and regulations will remain an on-going concern for CSW. As such, we need someone who has their finger on the pulse of the latest changes in policy, legislation, regulation and guidance able to identify the opportunities within the changing landscape as well as understanding the many other challenges faced by unpaid carers. These include issues surrounding access to appropriate care-packages as well as the increasing competition posed by private companies offering care and carer support services.

The Role

  • Ensure that the policies and practices of Carer Support Wiltshire are in keeping with its aims.
  • Formulate and regularly review the strategic aims of the charity with particular emphasis on health and social care.
  • Contribute specific skills, interests and contacts, particularly with regard to health & social care commissioning.
  • In association with the Chair and Chief Executive, communicate the strategic vision to volunteers, employees and other organisations.
  • Ensure that the charity functions within legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
  • Engage in regular review of organisational structure, functions and service delivery.

Person Description

  • Significant experience in the field of health and social care with emphasis on the challenges faced by unpaid carers. (Essential)
  • A strong understanding of the changing nature of the health and social care environment, including the Care Quality Commission. (Essential)
  • Experience of delivering health and social care services. (Essential)
  • An understanding of good governance, Charity Commission, Companies House requirements and relevant legislations and statutory requirements. (Essential).
  • Commitment to Carer Support Wiltshire and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort (Essential).
  • Strategic vision, good judgement and ability to think creatively (Essential).
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team (Essential).
  • Adherence to Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership (Essential).
  • Current or past experience of caring (Desirable)

What impact the opportunity will have?

CSW has undergone a transformation in recent years, created from the merging of four smaller district charities to form the large county wide organisation which today supports around 12,000 carers.  The Trustee role will have a significant impact on the organisation’s ability to continue its work.

CSW is entering an exciting new phase, building new projects, diversifying income sources in its goal of ensuring Wiltshire carers are well supported. The Trustee will play a significant role in all of this and undoubtedly it is an opportunity which offers the trustee a wealth of experience and knowledge in the carer support sector.

Time Commitment

The average time commitment of these roles will be one day per month. This includes 5 full board meetings per year whilst subcommittees meet quarterly. There is one trustee away day per year and a number of events which require the attendance of staff, volunteers and trustees. All successful candidates are expected to sit on the relevant sub-committee which, in this case, is the Quality & Policy Subcommittee. Trustees should also be prepared to contribute their expertise on an ad-hoc basis depending on the needs of the charity at a given time.

CSW is always open to discussion regarding timings of board meetings to ensure that all trustees are able to contribute fully, irrespective of their current commitments and employment status.

Whilst CSW is focusing its search on trustees with current experience in the skill areas outlined above, it will also welcome applications from volunteers with other relevant skills and from individuals with backgrounds and experience currently under-represented on the Board.
