JOB SPECIFICATION The role of the Legal Officer is to devise, implement and manage legal advocacy designed to achieve PI's policy and advocacy objectives. The Legal Officer will be expected to understand and work within a variety of local, national and international jurisdictions, including those governed by common law or civil ; The Legal Officer will work alongside people across PI on advocacy, policy, research, and public engagement in order to formulate new and creative ways to demand change and achieve policy and advocacy goals set by PI and, as relevant, our International Network of partner organisations. This will include bringing cases against governments and companies, intervening in actions in domestic and regional courts, advocating before regulatory bodies, and using other legal tools to assist with PI's advocacy and research. About our work: The Legal Officer will help execute PI's strategy in accordance with its new multi-year strategic plan, which includes interventions designed to prevent data exploitation during the election cycle; defend against government assaults on civic engagement; protect our identities, security, and social, cultural and political rights from vulnerabilities created by the deployment of new systems; and restrain government and corporate exploitation of data more broadly. You are keen to learn new multidisciplinary ways of achieving change. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Experience Law degree, in any jurisdiction. Experience taking creative approaches to novel legal challenges. Experience in NGOs/human rights organisations, law firms or in house, working on litigation or legal action initiatives. Experience assessing and mitigating legal risks faced by ; Experience drafting and editing contracts and other legal instruments. Knowledge of and experience working with international human rights standards and/or national rights frameworks. Knowledge of legal issues related to data and privacy, including data protection, or the legal concerns raised by techniques such as automated decision-making and profiling. Experience with or willingness to learn about the complex interaction between law and technology. Experience of strategically engaging with diverse communities across cultures. Skills Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the highest level of attention to detail. Ability to work with and manage relationships with counsel, partner organisations and coalitions. Strong interpersonal skills that can be applied to communicating and engaging with colleagues and external audiences from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Proactive and self-motivated individual capable of working unsupervised and taking responsibility for managing relationships with key partners, stakeholders and policy-makers. Desirable Experience Advanced university qualification preferred (Masters, JD or equivalent). Admitted to practice, in any jurisdiction. Knowledge of and experience advocating for the protection of social, economic and cultural rights. Skills Ability to speak publicly, including with the media and at conferences and meetings. Proven track record of communicating complex issues to diverse audiences. Fluency in a language other than English. Willing and able to work occasional evenings and weekends, and to travel internationally.
