Senior Quality Engineer

Job Location: Ilminster, Somerset

Job Type: Permanent

Salary: up to £38,000

Hours: 37.5 hours Mon to Thurs 8.00am -4.30pm & Fri 8.00am - 1.30pm

An industry leading engineering company based in Ilminster that manufactures metal parts for the Automotive and Marine industry have an opportunity for an experienced Senior Quality Engineer.

Core Purpose of the role:

To support the Quality team in providing an efficient and professional service to our customers, our suppliers and our manufacturing facility. Drawing on a range of quality tools and techniques, this position plays a key role in problem solving and continuous improvement activities.

Key tasks & Responsibilities:

  • To deliver PPAP and other similar part or process approvals, which includes gauge studies, process flow diagrams, control plans, process capability studies, ISIR's & material certifications
  • Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • ISO9001 Quality Management System and documentation
  • To promote & maintain high levels of 5S
  • To promote & follow all health & safety practices & procedures
  • To understand and utilize all modern quality tools & techniques in the pursuit of meeting departmental and individual targets.
  • Follow all document control practices
  • To work within the existing systems and to ensure new or amended systems, process or procedure changes are implemented formally

  • Expert use of standard hand tools such as Micrometers, Calipers, Gauge blocks etc.
  • Correct interpretation and measurement of technical engineering drawings, including geometrical tolerances
  • Understand and operate advanced measuring tools
  • Concept design, development, validation & implementation of new or amended measurement systems & devices

  • Internal & supplier auditing, involvement with external/ customer audits
  • Customer and supplier liaison including visits (may include overseas travel)
  • Writing technical, supplier and quality engineering reports
  • Delivering Quality improvement projects within a timely manner
  • Support production and other departments with projects, continuous improvement, investigative and development work
  • Reverse engineering and application support
  • Making presentations, sharing information and training colleagues
  • Preparing material & providing quality training to production members
  • Delivering the Quality induction
  • Actively participating / preparing for and / or chairing meetings

Planning & Control
  • Product Manufacture Quality planning
  • Goods Inwards Quality planning
  • Outgoing goods Quality planning
  • In process & final inspection Quality planning
  • Application of internal standards
  • Process control & internal audits
  • Preparing centerline gauge details
  • Customer complaint handling
  • Concession request processing
  • Detailed analysis of internal reject and other quality related data
  • Preparing KPI management reports
  • SPC and capability indices

Problem solving
  • Root cause analysis using problem solving techniques such as 5 Why, Fishbone, 8D, brainstorming etc.
  • Implementation & follow up of Corrective & Preventive actions
  • Design of Experiment and other quality tools & techniques
  • Measurement, analysis & disposition of product returns & stock

Other additional responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in developing methods for inspection, testing, sampling and training of testers and where necessary, to inspect product and provide cover for the quality inspection team.
  • Assisting in developing quality assurance policies and procedures, and promoting the Company's quality policy
  • Maintaining the supporting computer systems and records and developing new spreadsheets and databases including the use of complex formulae and formatting techniques
  • Managing internal corrective action systems and working to reduce overdue or outstanding actions in like with business objectives.

Participating in improvement projects & kaizen activities

Hours: Monday - Thursday 8.00am - 4.30pm & Friday 8.00am - 1.30pm
