The job opportunity:

Working as part of the IT Operations Department, the Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for effective provisioning, configuration, installation, operation and maintenance of Server systems (including hardware, software and related infrastructure). This individual participates in technical research and development, to enable continuing innovation, and all other areas within the infrastructure teams' areas of responsibility.

Main duties:

  • Duties and Responsibilities will alter depending on the Terms of Reference for the individual Infrastructure team this role is assigned to.
  • Acting as technical lead as directed by line management.
  • Improvement of Infrastructure services, processes and policies.
  • Monitor, maintain and troubleshoot network infrastructure.
  • Monitor, maintain and troubleshoot Active Directory including the administration of computer/user accounts, security groups and group policy objects.
  • Monitor, maintain and troubleshoot server and storage infrastructure.
  • Configure and maintain 3rd party software i.e. security, monitoring and configuration software.
  • Provision of support to offsite units.
  • Accurately maintain all relevant documentation.
  • Keep abreast of current developments and techniques in the IT field.
  • Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.
  • It is a condition of employment that all employees undertake any reasonable task, within any department or area, that they are directed to perform which is relevant to the company's task at the Defence Academy, and is within the competence and ability of the employee.

What we are looking for in our candidates:

  • An experienced Systems Engineer with a proven track record of server systems design, configuration and administration.
  • Required to have Microsoft qualifications and / or relevant experience:
  • Required to have Microsoft MCSE or relevant experience.
  • Good knowledge of the following is highly desirable:
  • Windows Server 2019, Server 2012, Hyper-V
  • System Centre Suite (SCOM, SCCM, SCVMM)
  • DNS, DHCP, SSH, failover clustering
  • Security and monitoring of IT systems
  • Required to have a degree or equivalent experience.
  • An understanding of ITIL would be desirable.
  • The ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Experience of and ability to deliver projects in an IT environment.
  • Ability to prioritise and execute tasks to exacting standards whilst working to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to research problems and identify solutions either as part of a team or alone as required.
  • Flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • It is a contractual obligation for all staff to wear the Serco uniform provided at all times when on duty. Your uniform should be kept clean, neat and tidy.
  • Adhere to the Health and Safety Act (1974) within the areas of his/her responsibility
  • A name badge is also provided and must be worn at all times on the left hand side of the jacket lapel / shirt pocket. The DMR Security pass must be worn at all times on a Serco lanyard.
  • There may be a requirement to use MOD-provided vehicles on behalf of the MOD's business either as a driver or passenger.
