UK Financial Controller - Head Office (Brighton) circa £35,000 (depending on qualification and experience) pro rata (22.5 or 30 hours out of 37.5)

Our client is a not-for-profit organization seeking to tackle poverty through renewable energy. They focus on enabling vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in developing countries to access affordable, reliable, renewable energy to provide opportunities for increased income and improved health and education facilities.

About the Role

An opportunity has arisen at their UK head office, in Brighton for a new enhanced role in leading financial management as a Finance Controller. The UK Financial Controller will report to and work closely with the Finance Manger (and in his absence the CEO) to provide with effective financial management for this growing internal charity. The UK Controller will ensure the Regional Finance Managers provide complete, accurate, timely and relevant financial information. The role will also directly manage a part time UK based Accountant in reporting results of that business unit.

The role can be 3 or 4 days full time equivalent per week with the extra day spent on administration, four days would be especially appreciate for the first 6 to 12 months to cover leave.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Support the Finance Manager and CEO with the following (roughly one third of time on each):

Report the Global financial performance
  • Lead on the monthly financial reporting process, working alongside the UK Accountant and Regional Finance Managers to ensure monthly Finance Reports are prepared accurately and on a timely basis for review
  • Prepare a quarterly rolling global forecast of the financial year, updating income and reforecast cost centre budgets, with variance analysis
  • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions following Renewable World financial policy and guidelines
  • Lead the preparation of records for the annual UK charity audit in accordance with Charities SORP
  • Strengthen their financial systems and processes where appropriate

Programme financial management
  • Ensure all regional project financial reporting is reviewed on a monthly basis with implementing project managers/regional finance managers
  • Prepare or review project budgets for programme concepts working with Programme Heads and regional financial controllers
  • Calculate and allocate quarterly the restricted expenditure to project funds and transfer to the requisite projects and donors
  • Work with the Grants Manager to ensure all donor financial reports are submitted accurately and on time to with sufficient variance analysis and context to enable transparency
  • Assist in the preparation of project budgets and review cost recoveries
  • Ensure timely programme recoveries are being accurately applied to project restricted funds
  • Providing support and critical review on project funding proposals
  • Manage donor financial reporting, including income, debt and deferred income accurately and timely in accordance with each donors requirements

Cash management
  • Update global cash forecast fortnightly and feed into long term forecast model
  • Ensure funds are managed in accordance with donor wishes and regional requirements
  • Initiate global fund movements to ensure programme and operational commitments are met
  • Budgeting and cost-centre management
  • Payment processing for operations and projects in accordance with policies and payment authorities
  • Manage inter-entity loan accounts
  • Support the UK Payroll as required

Essential competency and Experience requirements
  • Qualified accountant or Accounting/Finance degree
  • 5+ years of financial career experience within a global organization
  • Strong and proven organizational skills in managing finance systems
  • Previous experience in managing staff or stakeholders
  • Strong financial analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Functional knowledge of financial accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Understanding of project fund accounting and cost recoveries
  • Effective communicator (including excellent written and verbal English) as demonstrated on financial and narrative reporting, and verbal skills
