Leonardo is a global leader in defence electronics and delivers mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare and surveillance across land, sea and air. Working within Leonardo's UK Electronics Division, this Executive level Chief Materials Engineer vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to establish a new area of expertise within the business focused on materials, technology and process transitions associated with the ongoing restriction of hazardous materials under REACH and other associated legislation.

Many materials which have traditionally been used in the aerospace and defence industries because of their ability to withstand challenging environmental requirements are now being subject to increasing scrutiny as hazardous materials, and industry is being challenged to transition to alternatives. In this context Leonardo want to recruit an expert chemical engineer or materials scientist to lead work to establish alternative materials and an associated materials transition plan and roadmap for each new material which is subject to restriction.

As Chief Materials Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and developing the Hazardous Materials working group across the Electronics UK Business Unit, providing an ongoing surveillance of planned legislative material restrictions (e.g. under REACH), advising the business on impact, and lead the work to establish mitigating or alternative solutions. The role will require engagement with the internal delivery and capability teams, manufacturing and supply chain, as well as external agencies as necessary.

The successful candidate will act as point of contact for all materials science problems within Leonardo Electronics UK, providing expert technical advice to delivery projects on materials science problems, including where necessary sourcing expert advice and assistance externally.

This role will suit a senior chemical engineer, physicist or material scientist who is interested in applying their skills to create a new hazmat team within Leonardo Electronics UK, and advising the business on strategy and roadmap for each material transition which we will have to manage.

Key Responsibility Areas
  • Establish, develop and lead the Hazardous Materials working group to provide focus on all material safety issues including legislative compliance and material transition planning
  • Ongoing monitoring of planned material restrictions under REACH and RoHS / WEEE, plus any other development of materials safety legislation.
  • Advise the business on usages of materials which are being considered for restriction
  • Collaborate with the relevant technical functions to establish alternative processes and materials for each substance subject to restriction, and provide liaison with Leonardo's supply chain as required to source suitable suppliers of these alternatives
  • Liaise with engineering, capability, procurement and projects to advise on suitable transition roadmaps and timescales based on maturity analysis of alternative materials and associated manufacturing technologies and processes
  • Providing technical advice to projects on materials science problems, including where necessary sourcing expert advice and assistance externally in support of delivery programmes.
  • Act in a self-directed way in a strategic and business critical role as point of contact within Leonardo Electronics UK for all materials science, materials obsolescence and materials safety issues, liaising with external expert bodies, steering groups and committees as required to facilitate problem solving on delivery projects

Additional Information

Regular travel will be required within the UK, Europe or if necessary worldwide. The role will generally be office/lab based with use of DSE equipment.

  • Significant experience in surface chemistry and associated applications is highly desirable, ideally including substantial experience in surface chemistry tests, test equipment and analysis methods
  • Expert knowledge of REACH, RoHS, WEEE and other associated regulations including EU product Law, would be highly desirable, as would be a background in hazardous materials.
  • Ideally the successful candidate will be a Chartered Chemist, Materials Scientist or Physicist
  • Competence to analyse and understand the product design challenges required of materials science applications for the aerospace and defence industry is essential, with experience in this area being highly desirable.
