We are looking for a Device Physicist with experience of energy-band engineering in small-bandgap photo-absorbers including thin film semiconductors or quantum dot materials, to join the R&D team of a Cambridge based company.

This is a varied role and a great opportunity to broaden your skill base in a rapidly growing new business. It is fast paced and the requirements often vary, so it is critical that you are flexible, quick to learn new techniques and have exemplary attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Aid the design and modelling of optical-absorber layer-stacks in photodetector pixels in collaboration with colleagues
• Define the process steps required to fabricate optical detectors based upon these designs and verify performance, making the link between fabrication process conditions and performance
• Execute experiments to develop new device architectures and follow up to achieve functional prototypes
• Work with the process team to optimise device fabrication by actively contributing ideas for improving optical sensor performance and processing routes extending from R&D process runs to manufacturing of company broadband imager products
• Become a valued member of the R&D team by being a team player; able to take direction and facilitate open and constructive communication

Requirements

• PhD in physics, material science, or an equivalent research qualification in low-bandgap semiconductor materials, such as quantum dots, IR nanomaterials, solution-processed semiconductors, or other optical absorber materials
• An in depth understanding and proven experience in modeling the physics of band structure engineering in optical absorber layers. Knowledge of low-dimensional material physics is a plus.
• Experience working in a semiconductor fabrication or chemical laboratory and adhering to COSHH and H&S regulations
• Excellent attention to detail and communication skills both written and verbal
• A team player with a can-do attitude

The following skills would be a distinct advantage:

• Optoelectronic device fabrication/measurement.
• Experience with solution-based processes, vacuum deposition, patterning techniques, spin-coating, inert atmosphere glovebox operation
• Electro-optical testing and characterisation using a probe station and parameter analyser
• Knowledge of laboratory information management systems or other web-based systems
