Help us to shape the public understanding of assessment and education

We are looking for a Director of Public Affairs to join us and ensure coherence and integrity in our representation on a global stage.

You will be leading a team of technology-literate media specialists, supporting external messaging and influencing work whilst collaborating with key internal stakeholders. This team maintains sophisticated and intensive monitoring of conventional press and digital media, and is called upon to support those who are required to give evidence and information to regulatory and monitoring bodies - such as Ofqual and Select Committees - both in England and right around the world.

Maintaining all standards relating to press contact, the Director of Public Affairs will ensure that the appropriate training and support is in place as required, and will advise on how to respond to negative representation of the organisation by the means of conveying fair and accurate accounts of organisational activity.

The Director of Public Affairs will support strategy and development of brand, ensuring close collaboration across all our exam boards, OCR, Cambridge Assessment International and Cambridge Assessment English, in respect of their specific branding, liaising closely with The Cambridge University
Press and Cambridge University to ensure coherence of brand and brand policy.

What you'll be doing

Monitor events domestically and internationally, determining responses which are consistent with the aims and values of the organisation.
Manage approaches to the development of short, medium and long term strategy which shapes and encourages deeper public understanding of the work of the organisation. This will include working closely with research and technical teams to ensure probity and accuracy, and reinforce the evidence-based nature of the work of the organisation
Maintain, monitor and develop domestic and international relationships and networks, ensuring that associations are highly functional and valuable.
Work collaboratively with other organisations and determine the limits and function of this collaboration.
Work closely with Internal Communications Teams to ensure timely and appropriate messaging on key issues to stakeholders and colleagues across the organisation.
Work with other assessment organisations on collaborative communications strategy where regulation demands it.
Oversee strategy and planning for organisational representation at a broad range of domestic and international events, including conferences, seminars, etc.
Take responsible for brand monitoring and maintenance and brand refresh - working closely with
The Press and the University. Brand enforcement and compliance matters will be pursued jointly with the Cambridge Assessment legal team.
Work closely with the Legal team on enforcement policy and specific enforcement actions.

What we're looking for


Degree level or equivalent
Extensive engagement in media training and professional updating


First class communication skills.
Ability to review copy of others and originate high quality text.
Ability to manage a team and maintain morale and momentum.
Capability in policy development.
Able to tailor actions, communications and analysis to specific circumstances
Able to work highly collaboratively with semi-autonomous units across an organisation

Wide and deep experience in crisis response and handling

Wide experience of Public Affairs and Communications, some experience of managing, reviewing and developing brand.
