Head of Software Development

The role

The Head of Software Development is a leadership role accountable for the successful delivery of software and cloud infrastructure for the Company.

Managing a team of software developers and IT specialists, the Head of development will work closely with the Senior Leadership Management Team in order to deliver software and IT services that meet user needs.

The successful candidate will be accountable for the creation and delivery of the strategic, software and joint IT architecture visions and leadership and all aspects of the development of the software.

Key accountabilities
  • Develop and deliver a strategic technological vision and direction for company that is aligned to the Technology strategy.
  • Drive technical standards and solutions, that scale and are performant using .Net and Azure
  • Lead and manage the Software Development and IT teams to deliver software, cloud infrastructure and architecture that meets the needs of users.
  • Ensure delivery consistent with Agile methodology across the team.
  • Work effectively with Project Managers and Product Owners to ensure delivery against agreed priorities.
  • Implement mechanisms to monitor, manage and provide progress on all software development activities.
  • Accountable for the on time and to quality delivery of software development projects.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and development of internal and external IT support systems.
  • Create, implement and maintain a continuous improvement plan for software development and Cloud IT infrastructure.
  • Working closely with the Product Managers with the aim of meeting current and future user needs.
  • Research the external environment, and where appropriate identify and recommend external partners for the delivery of best in class technologies suitable for company applications.
  • Reviewing and applying best practices to establish architecture and frameworks consistent with and supportive of the Product Strategy.
  • Ensuring that technology standards and best practices are maintained across the organization
  • To drive consistent standards and approaches throughout the development teams
  • Identifying and implementing technology trends that will be able to support the future success of the business
  • Articulating to colleagues, Trustees and user communities, the company's technological vision, opportunities, and challenges as agreed with the Product Managers and SMLT.
  • Collaborating with the appropriate functions and users to evaluate and identify technology platforms for delivering the company's products and internal services.
  • Understanding the epic use cases (and/or user stories) in order to oversee the design of the architecture for the products to be built.
  • Responsible for his/her own work planning against objectives set in agreement with the Chief Information Officer.

Skills and experience
  • Able to design and architect technically sophisticated solutions to meet challenging user requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft technology stack and new technologies of Azure.
  • Hands-on individual contributor role to design, develop and troubleshoot highly challenging and scalable cloud-based products.
  • Strong experience of building and developing data driven applications.
  • Strong understanding of the Agile software development cycle.
  • Strong experience in defining and implementing processes for development teams
  • Strong understanding of software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Strong understanding of microservices Experience working directly with Cloud providers/infrastructure (AWS, Azure etc.), database technologies (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server), operating systems (Windows).
  • Good understanding of the pros and cons of big-data processing approach
  • Experience overseeing data migrations
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, business analysts and senior management to identify requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategies..
  • Experience in day to day management of software development teams
  • Experience mentoring junior software engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers.
  • Hands-on expertise in many disparate technologies, typically ranging from front-end user interfaces through to back-end systems and all points in between.

  • 15 or more years in IT and business/industry
  • Strong technical experience in leading and designing solutions that scale using Azure and .net stack
  • A minimum of five to seven years of leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience in business/industry (beyond IT), managing cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility
  • Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, and strategic application to business needs, including the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, service delivery and information management across the IT function.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others.

Technical Skills
  • Able to join in and develop, participating and contributing to the outputs of every sprint.
  • Hands-on individual contributor role to design, develop and troubleshoot highly challenging and scalable products.
  • Design, develop and troubleshoot .Net based Web and Middleware applications using C#, .Net Framework (2.0-4.5), Angular, .NET Core, IIS, Asp.net, AJAX, MVC, JavaScript, SQL Server 2008 and above, MySQL, WCF, WEB API and Web Services.
  • Well versed with database design and programming on SQL Server.

This is a senior IT leadership position working in an environment that is going through rapid change and maturity. Candidates typically need to demonstrate all of the required competencies at an advanced or expert
