Assistant Charity Shop Manager

£8.21 per hour

28 hours per week (Including Saturday working) - more may be available

Based largely at Honiton, occasional shifts elsewhere.

18 month contract available

Ferne Animal Sanctuary is an animal charity that looks after unwanted and abandoned domestic and farm animals for over 80 years. To support our work we currently run three charity shops in Chard, Ilminster and Crewkerne.

We are now looking to recruit a full time Assistant Manager to be based largely at our new Honiton shop but with flexibility to support our Chard shop. You will be responsible for the day to day running of the shop, supported by the Charity Shops Manager based at our Chard shop.

Ideally with charity shop experience, you will have the energy and enthusiasm to drive the shop forward as well as a passion for retail. IT literate and numerate you will be comfortable with cash handling and shop performance monitoring. A driving license is essential.

Key tasks and responsibilities

Personnel management
  • Ensure HR and H&S Policies and Procedures are adhered to
  • To train and develop a team of volunteers to ensure their understanding of their role and retail guidelines, to ensure the efficient running of the shop.
  • To ensure that all volunteers are properly inducted and are aware of the shop fire risk and Health and Safety procedures.
  • To ensure that all volunteers who represent Ferne Animal Sanctuary are helpful, efficient and courteous when dealing with sales and donations and act in a professional manner.
  • To organise volunteer rotas and allocate duties to ensure expected levels of service operational needs are met.
  • To encourage a positive working culture, good volunteer relations and high levels of enthusiasm throughout the shop to create job satisfaction by working in a happy environment.
  • To communicate effectively with volunteers and all other members of staff by effective planning, prioritising, delegating and monitoring workload.

Commercial Management
  • To achieve agreed targets by delivering effective pricing, stock rotation, weekly promotions and sales initiatives.
  • To demonstrate a good understanding of all donated stock lines, ensuring adequate stock levels at all times.
  • Ensure that the shop and window presentation standards are met including the rotation of goods, window displays and promotional activities.
  • To achieve high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness and presentation.
  • To ensure any faults with the building are reported promptly
  • Ensure high levels of customer service are maintained and delivered
  • Ensure trading hours are strictly adhered to
  • Assume overall responsibility for the shop premises including key holding

  • To ensure correct procedures are adhered to for banking, cash handling and administration within Ferne Animal Sanctuary guidelines.
  • To report to the CEO any financial irregularities immediately they come to light ensuring sales are recorded properly and cash is kept secure at all times.
  • To monitor and control all shop consumables and expenses to meet targets set.

Other Tasks
  • To promote the work of Ferne Animal Sanctuary, (FAS) through a clear understanding of the Charity's aims and philosophy.
  • To adhere to FAS Health and Safety procedures and inform the Estates Manager immediately in the event of an incident, or any risks hazards.
  • To regularly update and maintain your knowledge of Health & Safety rules; fire drills; internal security; and accident procedures and adhere to these at all times ensuring correct reporting.

Your will work 4 days each week between Monday and Saturday, to be negotiated.You may be asked to work additional hours as necessary.
