Breakdown, Sectioning and Machining Technician

The role

You will be working as part of a team within the Weapons Science group providing support to the delivery of technical tasks. Within Weapons Science, our teams come from a variety of physics, chemistry, mathematics and related engineering backgrounds. They are critical to the assessment of weapons systems from long-range missiles to small arms pistols. The areas of work will include breakdown, sectioning and machining of weapon systems as part of key programmes in support of our Defence related customers. It is likely that the successful candidate will have an interest in engineering and an ambition to develop a career in weapon engineering. The role will be supplemented with training to develop the weapons knowledge required and will be based at our Fort Halstead site with some work at other QinetiQ facilities within the UK.

Key Accountabilities

Providing practical assistance to lead person and undertake data recording.

Providing engineering support to scientific staff.

Delivery of engineering activities such as supporting the breakdown of weapon systems or machining of explosives.

Knowledge, skills and Personal Qualities required

Knowledge of engineering principles and show an aptitude to learn how to perform a wide range of increasingly complex engineering skills.

Demonstrate good interpersonal and team working skills.

Must be able to exchange ideas and information effectively in a concise and logical way.

A strong ethos on the importance of safety and efficiency as well as working to a high standard.
Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and principles of engineering tasks such as turning/milling or use of band saws.

Basic IT Skills.

Physically able to conduct manual handling activities.

Essential Qualifications

Successful completion of higher education with a minimum of 2 A levels, one of which must be a relevant Technology or Engineering discipline, BTEC Diploma or NVQ at Level 3. (Training to NVQ Level 4 (HNC/HND) within an engineering discipline may be provided for a suitable candidate; in this case the educational / experience qualifiers will be reviewed.)

Ability to conduct complex technical or engineering tasks to the required standard under indirect supervision.

Desirable Qualifications

Desirable to demonstrate an understanding of energetic materials however training will be provided for the successful candidate.
