Have you considered a career in education? Could you inspire young people with learning disabilities to grow and develop?

As a Community Teaching Assistant, you won't be confined to the classroom. You'll deliver a community-based education programme to young people whose learning difficulties or autism mean that mainstream education won't always meet their needs. Each learner has a bespoke programme that develops key life skills and functional skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

You'll work in our Oxfordshire provision based at Abingdon College, joining a great team of tutors and learning facilitators, on a 39 week per year contract.

Every day is different but one thing is the same: the achievement you will feel as you watch young people blossom into adulthood. Come and add your chapter to our success stories!

About us

MacIntyre is an award-winning UK charity providing support services to people with learning disabilities. Our No Limits division provides bespoke education programmes to young people (16 - 25 years) with complex needs.

What we need from you

Underlying ability and attitude are just as important as background and experience. We can provide the specialist training you need, but we can't teach you to be kind, inspiring and adaptive, to have initiative, to be friendly and patient, and those are all essential qualities for this work.

You'll need good functional skills, including English, Maths and ICT, not only for the benefit of the learners, but to record their progress in our database system.

You must be a driver with your own transport insured for business use, willing and able to travel across the area - although based in Abingdon, you will support students around Oxfordshire. Reasonable mileage is reimbursed.

Some things you need to know
  • Most of your work will be during term-time but there is up to three weeks' training and development commitment during academic holidays.
  • You will often be out in public lone-working 1:1 with a learner.
  • Some young people require assistance with intimate care or medication.
  • They may, if feeling particularly anxious, show behaviour that can be challenging.

We'll provide you with a full induction, specialist training and support in all areas, together with leadership and direction from your manager.

Training and benefits

As part of your ongoing professional development and training plan you will complete the Level 3 Award in Education and Training; this is a fantastic qualification to support you in your daily work but can also be a part of a wider training and career pathway for you.

Benefits include:
  • Workplace pension scheme
  • MacIntyre Perks, which offers up to 6% discount off leading retailers including Tesco, Curry/PC World, Costa and many more
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support your health and wellbeing
  • MacIntyre Staff Savings Scheme
  • Cashplan which provides money back on core health treatments such as: optical, dental, physiotherapy, chiropody
  • MacIntyre Rewards Scheme
  • MacIntyre pays for your DBS check
