Barker Munro Insurance Recruitment are delighted to be working with a major uk Personal Lines Insurer who are expanding their Data Analytics Departments and as such require an experienced R&D Data Scientist.. The core function of the Data Scientist will be to develop advanced pricing, underwriting and fraud models using insurance data. As a Data Scientist you will work collaboratively with stakeholders in performing research and development in innovative new modelling activities.

As a Data Scientist you will work on full-cycle end-to-end data science projects by leveraging state-of-the-art Machine Learning techniques aligned with business objectives, lead and manage your own projects. As a Data Scientist you will also liaise with a broad spectrum of internal, industry and insurer stakeholders so communication and stakeholder management will be core to the role.

Your main responsibilities as a Data Scientist will include but are not limited to:
• Identification, development and delivery of methods that are based on a data science approach to pricing, underwriting and fraud analytics, including machine learning tools and opportunities
• Recommend implementation strategies to the management based on sound statistical methodology
• Support to key internal customers (Underwriting Department)
• Construction of robust statistical models that predict, amongst others, customer behaviour based on detailed historical data analysis
• Identify and investigate potential improvements to our current methodologies; plan and implement agreed changes
• To develop and maintain a good understanding of the Machine Learning developments within the industry
• Development of Data Scientists and Analysts

The Knowledge, skills and experience to be successful in this Data Scientist role are:
• Insurance experience is required
• A good quantitative degree in for example but not limited to: Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Actuarial Science
• Excellent analysis skills with the ability to manipulate and interpret data and make recommendations
• Knowledge in the use of a programming language (e.g. R, Matlab, Python, Julia)
• A natural problem solver, and willing to learn
• Self-motivated, with the ability to work on own initiative, to strict deadlines and unsupervised
• Ability to deal with and influence colleagues at all levels of the business
• Good at probing facts and challenging assumptions. Respected and trusted by others with a high level of integrity and objectivity.
