A Systems Functional Lead is required to join the existing team as a result of significant growth within the Systems Engineering Department.

The role will be based at Luton but the successful candidate may lead Systems Engineering teams at other UK sites and should expect to travel in support of UK wide initiatives.

Key Responsibility Areas

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing functional resources in order to meet the requirements of the Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) across multiple sectors of the business.

Resource Management:
  • Working alongside the IPTs to understand the resource levels and skill profiles required to deliver both current and future business to cost, schedule and agreed technical compliance.
  • Providing support to make/buy decisions and identification of suitable outsourcing opportunities in the supply chain. Facilitating engagement between the suppliers and IPTs.
  • Recruitment across all experience levels.
  • Providing day-to-day management of direct reports, actively addressing development needs and performance. Acting as an appropriate role model, coach and mentor to develop team leaders.
  • Promoting and encouraging close team working practices.

Identification of best practice and facilitating the transfer of knowledge within a large team environment.

Demonstrated Performance:

- Monitoring the performance of the Systems Function, in accordance with company processes, in order to design and implement activities which will improve the quality and productivity of the systems engineering output.

- Supporting the business review cycle through attendance and input to project, technical, financial and business management reviews as required.

- Managing the assigned budget (e.g. training and process improvement expenditure) to maximize return on investment whilst meeting utilization targets set by the business.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
  • Engineering Experience

- Thorough understanding of the Engineering Lifecycle, with an ability to tailor and apply company practices and policies to project delivery.

- Familiar with Systems Engineering toolsets and techniques

- Defence Domain knowledge and experience desirable

- Engineering or Scientific Degree
  • Strong interpersonal skills

- Able to motivate and encourage, with a passion for helping engineers progress and develop their careers in order to meet the needs of both the individual and the business.

- Demonstrable experience of resolving challenging issues within both the personnel and project delivery arenas.

- Good verbal and written communication skills.

Intrinsic Job Factors
  • This is a significant engineering role which requires the ability to prioritise and manage own workload effectively. Working to tight deadlines will be required.
  • Excellent communication, motivational and coaching skills will be required, as will a degree of resilience to deal effectively and fairly with performance management concerns.
  • This is predominantly an office based role using display screen equipment.
  • As part of this role the successful candidate will be expected to travel within the UK on an ad-hoc basis.
