Production and Procurement Manager - Milton Keynes

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 (negotiable depending on experience)

The Company

Our Client is an Innovative engineering company, UK based manufacturing a wide range of Pile Driving machinery and equipment. Products include Impact Piling hammers, Excavator Mounted Vibratory hammers plus a wide range of accessories and additional products associated with the foundation, and construction sectors which are also supplied and hired to the Oil and Gas off-shore subsea market sector. Head Office located within Milton Keynes with a subsidiary company in Kansas City supporting the North American Market, plus a further network of established distributors across the globe, the company has grown export sales over the past 42 years which now account for some 65% of their business. Due to changes they are looking to recruit an experienced Production and Procurement Manager to be responsible for the management of a small machine shop team using CNC and Turning machines plus other processes and schedule production manufacturing and build program, quality control of all production, also the Purchasing function with a £2m annual spend.

Production and Procurement Manager - Overall purpose of the role.

As a production manager, youll be involved in the planning, coordination and control of manufacturing processes. Youll make sure goods and services are produced be responsible for sourcing materials, equipment, goods and services and managing vendors. Managing the work load and output of the machine shop producing parts for both new build production machines and the ongoing quantity of parts for the spares after market. Be able to perform strategic procurement activities across multiple categories of spend, including new plant and machinery, steel material stock for production and outsourced bought in items for production for small batch runs. Short term, maintain the current levels of production in respect of volume and quality, with a longer term view to improve output and influence margins and in-line with company strategy. Medium term, improve trading terms with existing suppliers and develop new supplier long term relationships. Responsible for stock control and stores working area plus QC on a daily basis.

Key Areas of Responsibility


- Ongoing - Planning to ensure production requirements are met for stock build machines, manage machine shop and suppliers to ensure smooth throughput of volumes with full utilisation of operators.
- Ensure production is cost effective
- Decide what resources are required
- Monitor product standards and implement quality control programmes
- Liaise and work with all department managers to implement the companys policies and goals
- Ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed
- Supervise and motivate a team of workers
- Review worker performance
- Identify training needs.
- Part of HSE team a role that could be expanded


- Develop, lead and execute purchasing strategies with key suppliers - metal fabrications, castings, steel and aluminium bar/plate, diesel engines, hydraulic pumps, hoses and components.
- Progress chase suppliers in support of production schedule, manage and mitigate risks.
- Negotiation strategies and close deals with optimum terms.
- Determine quantity, quality and timing of deliveries to meet customer requirements
- Forecast price and market trends to identify changes, for optimum benefit of DCP.

Desirable Experience

1 Proven working experience as operations manager in an engineering field.

2 Experience of machine shop processes and workshop planning.

3 Familiarity with sourcing and vendor management

4 Interest in market dynamics along with business sense

5 A knack for negotiation and networking

6 Working experience of vendor management software

7 Ability to gather and analyse data and to work with figures

8 Solid judgement along with decision making skills

9 Ability to communicate with all the team and prioritise work load.

10 Strategic work place review to be part of a future team in implementing new production/accounts IT system therefore knowledge of purchasing and manufacturing


- Planning and organisation skills to be able run and monitor the production process
- Ability to act decisively and solve staff or equipment-related problems
- Capacity to grasp concepts easily
- ICT literacy to deal with various technologies and programmes
- Attention to detail to ensure high levels of quality
- Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with your team, managers and suppliers and clients
- Strong negotiation skills for getting materials within budget at the right time
- Ability to work under pressure and motivate others to meet deadlines
- Ability to work in a logical, systematic manner.
- Manufacturing software system/ERP system high user level experience
- Key member of Implementation of a new manufacturing system/ERP
- Overseeing apprenticeship scheme
