An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant IT Manager to join our client in Brandon, Suffolk.

This is a full-time, permanent position and will lead to future progression opportunities for the right candidate. You'll play a vital role in the smooth operations of the business and have the chance to be much more involved and hands-on than in a traditional IT Support role.

They are at a particularly interesting point in their history and are on-track with their ambitious yet very achievable business plan which will see their team grow considerably over the next five years.

The Role

The position will be supporting 130+ users across multiple sites, as well as field-based users also. Working in a small duo IT team alongside the IT Manager, this will be a challenging, fun, busy and fast-paced role. It'll require top-notch technical skills and a friendly, laid-back personality with an unflappable nature!

This isn't your average IT Support role; you'll be a commercially astute leader as you will get involved in everything from 1st Line support and troubleshooting to planning and deploying major CapEx projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • First-line support to 130 + users over two main sites plus remote workers in the field
  • Configuration, management and maintenance of network systems consisting of two physical servers with eight virtual hosts including two MS SQL Servers hosting CRM / Sage 200, MS Exchange and Remote Desktop server for remote site access
  • Play an active part in the development of a systems roadmap working with departmental heads to offer the business hardware and services within budgetary constraints
  • Ensure desktop architecture is regularly audited and software updates applied
  • Maintain Asset register of company-provided hardware including mobile communications devices
  • Be part of the vendor management and selection process on the following supported services: Managed Print, Mobile phones and landlines, Data connectivity, Network support, Site telecoms hardware support, Sage & CRM Support, Network Security & Testing services
  • Mentor, guide and support colleagues within other departments in the use of new and existing software and tools to help in their roles

Requirements

As well as having plenty of prior experience in an IT Support role (five years as a minimum, some at Management/Supervisory level ideally), we require somebody who is a capable and confident working in a small team within a large organisation. You'll need to be responsible, well-organised, calm and importantly; have a good sense of humour!

Other requirements are as follows:
  • Experience of supporting 100+ users (ideally within a commercial or manufacturing company, however, this is not essential)
  • Strong networking skills and knowledge of Windows Servers and MS Exchange (essential)
  • Advanced technical ability to manage and support operating systems, applications and network software and the ability to install, maintain and upgrade all hardware
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • The ability to confidently and effectively communicate with all levels of staff
  • The ability to manage a demanding workload and an ever-changing list of priorities
