Benefit, Debt & Money Advice Advisor for the Royal British Legion Contract

37.5 hour position, usually working 9-5 Mon-Fri but this can vary dependent on appointments

Do you have experience in providing benefit, debt and money advice to vulnerable people? If so, we need you!

We are looking for applicants to join our team in Nantgarw providing debt advice and advocacy services to current and ex-serving members of the UK Armed Forces. Ideally applicants will hold the Certificate in Money Advice Practice obtained via the Institute of Money Advisers, along with being a debt relief order intermediary or, working towards this.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing debt advice both on the phone and online.

Applicants must demonstrate the following qualities:
  • A valid IMA qualification or working towards this;
  • Great attention to detail;
  • Outstanding customer service skills with an empathic manner;
  • Experience in providing benefit and/or debt advice

Job Specification for BDMA Advisor

Education & Training :
  • Educated to a good standard which is to at least GCSE level or equivalent.
  • You will have successfully obtained the Certificate in Money Advice or be willing to work towards obtaining this qualification.
  • You will be preferably be a DRO Intermediary or be willing to qualify as one.

Knowledge & Experience
  • Extensive debt and welfare benefit knowledge. Applications will be considered from candidates with extensive knowledge in one of the two areas as long as the candidate is willing to work towards gaining extensive knowledge in both areas.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing advice/carrying out casework on welfare benefit and debt issues (minimum of 1 years full time equivalent experience). Applications will be considered from candidates with experience in one of the two areas as long as the candidate is willing to work towards being a competent adviser for both areas.
  • Experience of managing and being accountable for own caseload to include meeting deadlines and targets.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable beneficiaries facing challenging circumstances is desirable.
  • Experience of providing help of those within the Armed Forces Community is also desirable.
  • Experience working in accordance with the Data Protection Act (2018) and to ensure all new systems are reported to the Data Protection Officer.
  • Thirdly it is desirable that you have gained experience of delivering debt and/or welfare benefits advice by telephone and/or by email. This would preferably be on a national basis.
  • Lastly it is also desirable that you have experience of carrying out quality assurance work e.g. peer reviews.

Skills:
  • Able to consistently deliver high quality advice in accordance with the Financial Conduct Authority requirements (where relevant).
  • Effective as a member of a team but also able to work independently.
  • A good telephone manner along with effective communication skills.
  • Effective writing skills e.g. correspondence, submissions and good numeracy skills e.g. preparation of financial statements.
  • Ability to use IT in the provision of advice, case recording and preparation of reports and submissions.
  • Able to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to form empathetic relationships with beneficiaries
