We have a great new opportunity to join the team at Walnut Unlimited as a Payroll Assistant. You will join an existing team who currently support payroll, pension scheme and general enquires, for several agencies across the Unlimited Group.

This is a part time opportunity, 28 hours per week (worked across 4 days - We are flexible with either a Monday or Tuesday being a non-working day)


Our new Payroll Assistant will help to provide timely and accurate payment of salaries and wages to all staff (circa 1,000 employees each month). You will help with the administration of pension schemes when needed, with payroll queries, answering questions from employees and managers and liaising with external agencies such as HMRC and the DWP. You will also have responsibility for some office management as and when needed.

Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring new starters are set up on the payroll system, leavers are removed, input is made to pay salaries and hours claimed, checks for accuracy of statutory and voluntary deductions from salary are applied with appropriate authorisation
  • Calculate and process family friendly leave and pay including maternity, paternity and shared parental leave
  • Assist with administering the Pension auto-enrolment scheme, ensuring compliance with legislation and all communications are sent to workers in line with the Pension Regulator's requirements
  • Maintenance of accurate and up to date records of employee holiday, sickness and other absence, providing analysis and reports when required.
  • Accurate calculation and transfer of monthly payments to HMRC for tax and NI contributions, and other deductions and returns using RTI.
  • Assist with ensuring company benefits are managed effectively e.g. medical care, bonuses
  • Issue tax forms (e.g. P45s, P60s)
  • Provide regular reports from payroll and, when requested, deliver adhoc payroll reports for the Board of Directors


  • Previous experience in a similar role using payroll software.
  • Good standard of education, with GCSE passes in Mathematics and English or equivalent.
  • The ability to deal with multiple payrolls / queries efficiently at the same time whilst maintaining excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good level of experience and knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience of handling confidential data with professionalism and discretion
  • Good listening, questioning and literacy skills including the ability to interpret data and produce effective verbal and written reports and correspondence
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a team or independently.
  • A flexible and hands on approach to work, assisting teams across the business in delivering administrative tasks to achieve company success.
  • Good time management skills with the ability to plan ahead
  • Excellent attention to detail, and accuracy with a flexible approach to ensure any changes to workload priorities can be accommodated

  • Knowledge and experience of using SAGE 50 Cloud payroll.
  • Pension administration experience
