The geotechnics and engineering geology team in Swindon is one of JACOBS' main centres for geotechnics within the UK and currently employs circa 26 staff. The team undertakes a wide range of internal service work, a proportion of which is for overseas JACOBS infrastructure projects, together with a broad range of projects for external clients that are won and managed by the team. Areas of work include highways, energy, nuclear, environmental, water, maritime, land development and building sectors. This varied workload provides exceptional prospects for career development, as the team is involved with some of the largest, most complex and prestigious civil engineering projects.

Due to an increase in our workload, we are seeking a Geotechnical Design Technician to undertake geotechnical support and design work for a range of interesting projects throughout the UK and overseas. A large proportion of our work is undertaken within national frameworks and for design and build contractors. The role will be to assist in the geotechnical aspects of projects by input to their investigation, design, construction and post construction monitoring.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

The position would suit a committed and ambitious candidate who has skills in the generation of 3D ground models and drawings for use by Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers. The candidate will work within project teams and report to project / package managers. The priorities of the role are likely to include:

Providing CAD / Civil3D / ArcGIS support for a wide range of geological / engineering geology / geotechnical studies

Preparing drawings in accordance with relevant BIM & drawing standards

Establishing, managing and working within BIM-compliant Common Data Environments as employed by Jacobs and their clients

Managing and storing drawings and other project deliverables in accordance with Jacobs Quality and BIM standards and other requirements

Developing 3D models of the ground and sub-surface

Developing models of proposed infrastructure alignments and development areas

Preparing contoured surfaces and 2D geological cross sections

Assisting with the preparation of figures for technical notes, desk studies, feasibility studies and interpretative reports

Handling, manipulation and presentation of data using spreadsheets

Contributing to the development of routines for automation of drawing, modelling and calculation tasks, including training and application of specialist software to improve efficiency of delivery of design work

Undertaking occasional site-based data-collection duties (e.g. monitoring of borehole water levels)

Carrying out other activities related to multi-disciplinary projects as directed by the TGE Discipline Lead.Essential Requirements

GCSE pass at grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths and English Language

An academic qualification in civil engineering, or an appropriate related discipline

Knowledge and experience of using AutoCAD in 2D & 3D

Knowledge and experience of using Civil 3D

Excellent ICT skills

Ability to deliver high quality work to deadlines

Desirable Requirements

The ideal candidate would also possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:

Experience of working within the geotechnical sector

Experience in the generation of 3D ground models for topographical and geological surfaces, development and use of corridor modelling and use of LISP routines

Knowledge and experience of using AGS data and geotechnical data management software, e.g. HoleBASE SI

Knowledge and experience of GIS software

Knowledge and experience of coding in common programming languages

Basic knowledge of the principles of geotechnical design

Good communication skills with fluency in verbal and written English

Problem solving & analysis skills

Team player but with an ability to work independently when required

Planning & organisational skills
