The landing gear as a system of systems covers multidisciplinary skills such as "structure, systems, hydromechanics, kinematics, aerodynamics, noise, avionics, loads, thermodynamics, performance, stability and control". It is a critical system highly integrated into the aircraft and encapsulates both primary structure and complex systems in a challenging operating environment. You will regularly interface with Chief engineers and Programmes, as well as suppliers and regulatory authorities, hence create your internal and external network leading to career development. We strive for innovative solutions to solve complex problems and anticipate future trends such as predictive maintenance data analytics, Electrification, Additive layer manufacturing and Model Based System Engineering. Description of the job A vacancy for a Landing Gear Structural Analysis Specialist / Principal Engineer has arisen, based in Bristol, UK, reporting functionally and operationally to Head of Landing Gear (ATA32) Engineering Excellence. Within the Landing Gear Structural Analysis community you will be responsible for providing structural analysis expertise and leadership at all stages of the product life-cycle from initial concept phase through detailed design, certification and supporting the in-service fleet, and across all civil aircraft programmes. Task & accountabilities :The main tasks and responsibilities of this role are: • Support the programme teams with structural analysis expertise and leadership. Provide direction for structural analysis activities, provide guidance to suppliers. • Work closely with the landing gear structures DCS and Technical Authority to agree certification bases for TC and Mods. Ensure the work produced in the programme teams meets the requirements for structural certification and is produced in line with all technical requirements and Airbus standards and processes. • Approval of DOA relevant certification and continued airworthiness documents (subject to achieving the required level of delegated authority). • Provide support to the in-service engineering department of EL. Support the timely resolution of in-service events and the approval of in-service solutions e.g. RDAS, ASAC, TA and FCD (subject to achieving the required level of delegation) and contribute to related continual improvement projects (e.g. HaLO, AAA). • Provide technical leadership to ensure successful closure of investigations launched as a result of quality escapes, test failures, design issues, ISOs, ENGOs • Represent ELTE as an independent panel member for internal and supplier design reviews. Support Programme Review Meetings (PRM) & Technical Review meetings (TRM), as required. • Actively participate in mentoring and development within the structural analysis community. Ensure knowledge capture and reuse, and ensure best practise for structural analysis activities is communicated and employed across the whole of EL. • Define ways-of-working and local processes and procedures as necessary. • Develop and maintain professional networks within Airbus and within our Suppliers This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. Required skills :Candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience: • Educated to degree level in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering. • Extensive experience of stress analysis, including knowledge of both static and safe-life fatigue methods and principles and their application to all phases of structural design and development. Experience of landing gear stress analysis would be a benefit, but not essential. • Level 1 technical approval signatory (or Level 2 developing towards Level 1) for static and/or fatigue analysis. RTE2/3 signatory delegation would also be beneficial • Experience of: o the Airbus structural certification process. o landing gear stress methods, principles and ways of working would be beneficial, but not essential. o design/development process and governance, ideally with experience of Airbus' process. o Airbus processes for managing in-service events would also be beneficial. • Able to o determine best practice, develop rules and analysis methods for landing gear structural analysis o achieve agreement through well-justified and pragmatic argument. o structure, record and communicate knowledge clearly and consistently. o foster strong team working and mentor other Engineers • English language at negotiation level.
