The Opportunity:

GSL Dardan Limited was formed in 2009 as a result of a merger between two of East Anglia's long established security solutions providers, creating the largest regional security business throughout the Eastern region. Since then, Dardan has grown in its service offering providing security technology, intelligence consultancy and bespoke security solutions. We have also grown geographically moving our head office to Cambridge and building a portfolio in London and Essex to become a truly national security provider.
This is an opportunity for a fantastic accountant to join a progressive, privately-owned company and lead the entire finance function of the business.

Your reporting line will be direct into the Managing Director Philip Anthony, your key stakeholders will be the senior leadership team while managing a team of 4 people across finance and commercial.

This role comes at a crucial time for the business; we have reached 13 million in turnover and we are looking to reach our target of 15 million in the next two years. You will play a crucial part in making that happen.

As an industry we face significant pressure on our margins with profitability of contacts sitting at 1-3%. We have to differentiate ourselves as a security provider, choose the right contracts, negotiate our rents, manage our suppliers, insurers and bankers to optimize every penny. Profitability of the business is at the heart of this role; you will be the advisor to senior leadership, giving insight to aid commercial decision making. This is a very operationally led role, profitability of our contracts is influenced by spend on training, uniform, overtime and adhoc client requests so you not only have to lead finance but you also have to have the strength of character to build relationships with every area of the business to influence behaviour building that commercial and financial awareness from grassroots up.

Key responsibilities as a Commercial Finance Manager include:
  • Prepare financial reports, forecasts and analysis (profit and loss, variance analysis, balance sheet, cash flow etc.) for the entire business; present these reports to the board will full and satisfactory explanation and justification
  • Oversee, review, and adhere to the budgets for each business department; lead on company-wide budget planning
  • Ensure that all the company's financial practices are in line in statutory regulations and legislation
  • Work with the senior leadership team as business partner - or "steward" - to ensure all business decisions are appraised for their financial viability
  • Monitor cash flow, sales and purchase ledgers, and other financial transactions
  • Supervise, coach and guide the finance and commercial teams in the facilitation of day-to-day operations, including tracking financial data, invoicing, payroll, etc.
  • Create and maintain relationships with financial auditors, bankers, insurance brokers, IT providers, HMRC etc
  • Create, update and implement financial and commercial policies and procedures
  • Prepare contract pricing and new business costing
  • Monitor performance of commercial activities using key metrics and dashboard, and prepare reports for senior management
  • Project work including leading on the investigations into, and roll-out of, any new business information management system or financial accounting system (currently Sage) to increase integrations and efficiencies with other systems and departments
  • Carry out any other tasks and duties as deemed necessary to support the business

What we need from you:
  • Experience as a Commercial Finance Manager, Management Accountant or Finance Business Partner
  • Qualified Accountant or part qualified
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Experience working in the services industry would be highly valued but not essential, if you can bring new thinking and a fresh approach, we would value that just as highly
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with internal and external clients
  • Ability to work across and with all levels of management across the business
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise own workload
  • Excellent knowledge of IT (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Ability to travel particularly to and from our Head Office in Cambridge
