The Customs Compliance Officer will be responsible to facilitate the compliance of import and export activities relating to the business in accordance with all national and international regulations and controls.

Key responsibilities for Customs Compliance Officer and will not limited to:

• Checking of freight accounts for both export and import consignments issued by the relevant forwarder/Agent to ensure correct charges have been levied for the service/s provided and/or duties/taxes paid before passing them to the core finance department for payment.
• Arranging clearance of goods into the UK as appropriate - Issuing instructions with the relevant CPC to the agent (including Commercial Couriers) to allow for the goods' timely clearance into the UK and where necessary, authorising payment/suspension of applicable duties/taxes.
• Ensuring that any import permits/licences are in place to allow for the smooth importation of the goods into the UK.
• Maintaining all internal records for import consignments and completing all relevant HMRC returns.
• Assisting with all relevant HMRC and corporate/internal audits as required.
• Support compliance by ensuring all mandatory customs compliance functions are properly documented, owned and controlled.
• Identify errors and exceptions, take appropriate and monitored action, and report them in context of Cause, Consequence & Countermeasure.
• Create written controls to a high standard and interaction with the Internal Audit team, in order to schedule appropriate audits and reporting tools.
• Create Customs function training material and deliver training as directed.
• Liaise with site operations and monitor to ensure that customs controls are not compromised or circumvented.
• Liaising/improving with the business to authorise dispatches of goods to Customers/Suppliers both within the UK and to EU/other destinations using Freight Forwarders/Couriers on a permanent or temporary basis.
• Supervision of the maintenance all internal records for dispatched goods, including checks that Shipping Instructions are followed; customs entries with departure message/s are received; shipment paperwork is obtained (Bills of Lading, Air Waybills, Certificates of Shipment and Proofs of Delivery).

Travel specifictity

Site based role within Burnley, with occasional travel inside the UK and Europe.

Candidate skills & requirements

• Proven expert experience as a Customs Compliance Officer or freight forwarding, logistics, import/export orientated role.
• Manufacturing background is preferred.
• Understanding of the essential elements of Customs legislation especially Inward Processing Relief.
• Implementation of Customs Procedures and Simplifications - inland and at the frontier - UK.
• Understanding of business application and compliance principles of Customs Procedures in the supply chain.
• Customs compliance audit management - transactional & process audit - Continuous Improvement.
• Microsoft packages especially excel & the ability to handle 'big data'.
• Recognised customs / international trade qualification desirable.
• SAP/ ERP experience.
