Our client is the small UK office of a large international dental publishing company and are based in New Malden, Surrey.

Due to continued success they are looking to recruit an Accounts Assistant to join their team. The successful candidate will ultimately take ownership of the entire accounts function, being responsible for preparing the management accounts of the company to trial balance, including profit and loss, completing VAT returns and liaising with HMRC.

This is a standalone role requiring someone with a sound background of double-entry bookkeeping, with extensive experience of Sage Line 50. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure in a small team are essential.

General duties and responsibilities:
  • Taking responsibility for the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, petty cash, bank and credit card reconciliation and employees' expense management
  • Managing foreign currency bank accounts
  • Keeping accounts balanced at all times and investigating anomalies if and when they arise
  • Managing the accruals/prepayment adjustments and journal entries
  • Raising invoices as and when required and ensuring accurate tracking of information to enable precise reporting
  • Processing invoices for the purchase ledger
  • Checking invoices for the sales ledger
  • Allocating payments in both the accounting and CRM systems
  • Preparing VAT returns timeously and in readiness for the manager to review and submit to HMRC
  • Managing the aged debtor and payment plan list to ensure that customer payments are up to date
  • Assisting auditor with the financial year-end processes
  • Preparing intercompany reconciliations

Essential requirements:
  • Ideally, an ACCA or equivalent, or other acceptable accounting qualifications (or working towards one), including CIMA, ATT or ACA. Candidates without a qualification but with extensive experience will also be considered
  • Minimum of two years' bookkeeping experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to deal with clients and suppliers in a friendly and patient manner
  • Confidence to work under own initiative
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated with excellent organisational skills and a meticulous eye for detail
  • Experience using Sage Line 50
  • Knowledge of VAT
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • Thorough working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Professionalism and discretion
  • Complete understanding of double-entry, prepayments, and accruals
  • Numerical and data processing skills
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS reporting requirements, including IFRS 15
